Andy Serkis will be The Hobbit's second unit director
"I think I understand Peter's sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth. A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit. There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic."
Andy Serkis went onto say that his directorial duties will include some motion-capture scenes, but that his job will go beyond that.
"It is wide ranging and encompasses a lot of directing aspects of filmmaking and story. Yes, there is some performance capture, but I will be very much on the live action sets and locations helping Peter to tell the story. The learning curve is The Hobbit is being shot in 3D."
He also added that his Gollum character will be recognizable to fans of the franchise, and how motion-capture acting has become more respected in Hollywood.
"He is very much a Gollum that people will recognize. When we created Gollum the first time, performance capture was it its infancy. Within the industry, there is more appreciation for it as an acting art form. It's all about character, learning what the character thinks, feels, how he carries pain."
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Yeah, I'm excited to see what they do with Gollum. I mean, obviously it'll be faithful to what was done in the Lord of the Rings, but I'm hoping it'll look even better with the improved technology.

The Narrator: The Better Man
Fantastic news. I'm curious to see how Serkis handles the job, and if it gets him any directional debuts anytime soon. Can't wait for the film in general, either.

LOL, I don't think ANYONE would be stupid enough to not listen to Jackson. Hell, you go onto any set and you don't listen to the director or even the guy above you, you are gone for good.
