The Hobbit Confirmed for Three Movies!

The Hobbit will expand into a trilogy says Peter Jackson
Last week, we reported that Warner Bros. and director Peter Jackson were in talks to expand The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again into a trilogy. Today, the filmmaker confirmed that a third movie is actually happening! Take a look at the statement he released on his Facebook page this morning.

"It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran (Walsh), Philippa (Boyens) and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie - and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved 'yes.'

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of The Hobbit films, I'd like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, "a tale that grew in the telling."

Cheers,

Peter J"

It hasn't been confirmed when the third film will be released, although it will likely debut in December 2014.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released December 14th, 2012 and stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes to theaters December 13th, 2013 and stars Richard Armitage, Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ian McKellen, Aidan Turner, Dean O'Gorman, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

@zender Like I said that's fine, and I do like King Kong, I just don't want to personally see the same movies all the time... I was new original ideas and then have those films thrown in between...

I hope he stops at the third Hobbit and go back to the King Kong franchise, there are other films of it that needs to be re-telled.
And I thought he was attached to another fantasy series.

@thedude-abides Sounds about right. I thought two was more than enough, given how small of a book The Hobbit it. But... we'll just have to wait, cross our fingers, and see what happens.

  19. skywise

With the Hobbit book and even the appendices they are still pushing it to get 3 movies out. However with the rise of the Necromancer they could devle in to bits of the Silmarillion for the full story.

@the-movieghost I agree, although I'm not a huge fan of Jackson's work. Personally, I think he's one of the most overrated directors working right now. If you look over his catalogue, he's only had three successes (those being the three Lords movies), everything else has been sub-par.

This is an example, at least in my mind, of him going to the well three times too many. Sooner or later the law of diminishing returns is bound to kick in. A Hobbit movie would've been cool; two would've been pushing it; three is, or at least seems to be at this point in time, completely unnecessary. I'll withhold any judgement until I see the finished product, however, I won't keep my fingers crossed.

  21. Craig Bosko

It surprises me how many people see this as a bad thing. I don't think money had anything to do with his decision, though I am sure it helped convince the studio. There must be some really cool material in Tolkien's appendices and I have faith it will be an epic story worthy of three films.

  23. THE JOKER

@bawnian-dexeus The book is pretty short, especially in comparison to the other books. These movies will probably have to be drawn out to make it a trilogy...

Im not really crazy about this
I read the book and it's not even that long
I feel like Jackson is just doing this to bring in some more cash and people
1 or 2 movies is fine but now I feel like this is gonna take forever

@mcleve02 Well, I've never been that much of a Superman Fan. And these two new "Trailers" haven't done much to change that.

I think you've mistaken what @slysnide, @thedude-abides, and myself have said; we don't think that it's going to be screwed up, we're just being cautious about it.
