Evangeline Lilly joins The Hobbit cast
Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.
Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character-the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.
I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.
Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!
More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!
Cheers,
Peter J"

@dan1, that's got to be the perfect balance of heaven and hell - having to choose one of them, but at the same time, being allowed to choose one of them!

@dan1 - In relation to the trio of girls to sleep with......tough one but for me it would only be between two.....not three. I would kick Johannson out immediately, only to be stuck between Portman and Lilly for several hours, if not days, trying to reach a conclusion.
Eight years ago I would have taken Portman over ANYONE you could throw at me.......but now, I dont know, I think I might take Lilly. She is SO FRIGGIN SEXY. Tough call......very tough.

I still think Saoirse Ronin would be a good addition to the Sylvan elves. I know she said it isn't going to work out......but I think with Legolas, Thranduil and now Tauriel in the bag......adding one more elf to the mix, who is female at that, (as well as a great actress) would be the ultimate.
There is no getting around the fact that Saoirse Ronin looks very elvish......so if Tauriel is the role that was originally going to be hers (had she accepted) then I say still bring her in but give her a smaller role (that would also allow her schedule to accomodate it)
By the way, something tells me that Tauriel IS, in fact, the role that Ronin was originally going to play.....but I bet they felt the role needed to go to someone a little older. I'd place money on that one, too.

I couldn't be happier at the cast assembled for these movies. Adding Lilly was unexpected and just icing on the top.

@dan1 Johannson's a freak, huh? Good to know :P
As for this story, I'm cool with it. Very happy that Lilly decided NOT to retire from acting like she said she was going to do after Lost.

@narrator If someone lined up Lilly, Johannson, and Portman in a room, and said I could sleep with one, and only one, it would be a damned hard decision. Damned hard. I'd prob go with Johannson in the end, as she strikes me as the freakiest, but I know I'd have to debate it honestly in my head for a while.

@k-man That sounds like a good possibility. I could see that, sir.

Yeah, heard about this earlier today from Peter Jackson's facebook page.....friggin awesome. I cant think of a better elf than Evangeline Lilly....talk about perfect casting, she's drop dead gorgeous and a great actress.
Seeing her with pointy ears and those sexy contacts is going to put me on overload. By the way, twenty bucks says she is Legolas's sister (Thranduil's daughter)......any takers???
