Orlando Bloom may return as Legolas in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit
Orlando Bloom hasn't officially signed on at this time, although he is closing in on a deal to return. Orlando Bloom appeared in all three Lord of the Rings movies - The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King - as the skilled archer elf Legolas. Although the character doesn't appear in The Hobbit novel by J.R.R. Tolkien, the role was said to be larger than a mere cameo appearance.
It has been speculated for some time now that other original Lord of the Rings cast members such as Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Hugo Weaving (Elrond) will return for The Hobbit, although those deals have not closed yet.
If Orlando Bloom does sign on, he will join another original cast member, Cate Blanchett, who we reported just yesterday will return as Galadriel, another Lord of the Rings character who does not appear in The Hobbit book.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

They said it was more than a cameo, so I'm guessing he'll be seen in Mirkwood, then he'll be the one to kill Smaug, rather than that other guy. It would make sense, seeing as Jackson tended to change lines and roles between different characters in the LOTR trilogy.

Legolas will be near his father or amongst the crowd of elves. Just guessing at this point

The Narrator: The Better Man
Lol, for once I agree with @Brian. I've been saying Legolas needs to have a cameo in the film if they are going to be showing Mirkood, and his father. The only reason he wasn't in The Hobbit is because it pre-dated Lotr, therefore Tolkien didn't acknowledge Legolas' existence since he wasn't envisioned yet. But now that we know where Mr. Greenleaf comes from, it's only logical to have him somewhere in the film.

Ian McKellen has officially been signed on as well as Andy Serkis so no worries there. I'm a bit concerned about Legolas coming in on The Hobbit but I do trust Mr. Jackson....

Even though Legolas is not mentioned by name in The Hobbit, part of the story takes place in the Woodland realm of his father, King Thranduil, so this could be a cool cameo.

@Sly Agreed.

Alright, they need to remove all names from the castlist who've yet to sign any contracts, or have yet to be offered any deals.

Serkis better come back! He's like Frank Oz and Yoda. No one can do it better.
