The Green Hornet Release Pushed Back for 3D Conversion

We recently reported a rumor that Sony wasn't too pleased with an upcoming superhero film and, even though the rumor was debunked, it seems plans are changing for the film. Deadline New York is reporting that Sony is pushing The Green Hornet into 2011.

The site revealed that the studio has issued a January 14, 2011 release date for the film, so it can be converted into 3D. The release date falls on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend.

It seems Sony is regarding this move not as a 3D "conversion" but an "enhancement" as they say there is "great depths" to the film by director Michel Gondry. The site spoke with Sony's Jeff Blake, who dismissed the earlier rumors of the studio being unhappy with the film and insist that they're, "doubling down" on the film.

"We're investing more in the film to have it 3D," Blake said. "We've seen part of the movie. We love it. We believe in it. Whoever is spreading these rumors has not seen it. We're going to finish Green Hornet in 3D and take 9 months to do it right."

Asked why the studio chose the January 14 release date, Blake said they wanted to steer the film clear of the many 3D films debuting during that frame, such as Tron Legacy, Yogi Bear and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I. It was also said that the surprise success of the studio's Paul Blart: Mall Cop last year is seen as a "lucky charm" for the studio.

The Green Hornet was released January 14th, 2011 and stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Tom Wilkinson, Christoph Waltz, David Harbour, Edward James Olmos, Jamie Harris. The film is directed by Michel Gondry.

"we will gimmick this movie up as much as possible to get the stupid people to watch it" - Who's we?? You are presuming to talk for Everyone and Everyone Doesn't like you talking for them, when they don't know you. You say people are stupid. Where are the facts and figures to prove people are stupid? Everyone Can like or not like anything and you don't have the right to decide who will Like or not like a movie! And you think you want to be my friend on MovieWeb - I don't think so. I Don't like people like you putting other Respectful People down for absolutely nothing, when it is Not called for and unnecessary! Who's putting you down?? No One. Who or what is making you put people down for Nothing???

Now see... I go and post on a couple of stories that 3D isn't the enemy, just when it's done poorly and the studios go out and do this dumb conversion thing to movies that don't need it and further muck up the arguement. Good grief.

All I know... end of the day... Tron Legacy will be DOPE in 3D. Haters keep hatin'. You can keep your Green Hornets and Airbenders though.

@Spiedemon. Yeah but that's cause it was done in two weeks. WB was just trying to jump on the band wagon. When they were first approached they didn't want to put up the money to do it, but then AVATAR hits and does crazy money and WB was like "HEEEY We were gonna do that. Can we still?" At least Paramount has been thinking about it all along with Last Airbender. This is just a ploy to try and get people to see a movie they have no faith in.

"we do not like this movie. do not think it will test well or do well in theaters, so therefore we are going to assume audiences are stupid sheep that follow hollow fads. so we will gimmick this movie up as much as possible to get the stupid people to watch it, since it is incapable of standing alone with its story or merit as great cinema."

Enough with the 3d. as clash has proven, films look sh*te when retro-fitted for the format.

Only CGI films seem to work in 3d I think. Our eyes aren't as easily 'fooled' by real environments and people.

it is just about the money people, not about it actually looking good or not, but your right it was because avatar made money and made more money in 3d... hollywood does not care, it is about getting an extra 3 bucks from you so you can slap on those glasses. it is a trend... like stinkovision, and virtual sex porn, and beta tapes, and george w. bush :)

The fact that they moved it to January is the telling part of the story. Movie studios generally dump their dreck into the theaters in this month, knowing most people aren't paying attention to what's in the theater because of the award shows like the Golden Globes and Oscars.

unneeded but of course Seth Rogen would hop aboard the conversion process which is just a scam unlike Avatar which was filmed with the special cameras for 3D

I am sooooooo tired of this 3d gimmick already. I'm not paying extra for it. As a matter of fact, 3D prevented me from seeing Clash of the Titans because the theaters here are only showing it in 3D, and I refuse. I say leave the 3D for movies that will really be enhanced by it, or kids movies. Don't do it just to do it and make more money.

and i also heard recently that alice in wonderland was converted into 3d? is that true? if so, then thats an example of 3d conversions done right. i didnt think that the 3d was THAT great, but i definetly thought it did the film a little better and some scenes were kind cool in 3d. i couldnt see NOT seeing it in 3d. it would just feel odd. not right, you know?

well, this MAY work. im still a lil confused, but atleast this wasnt throw together last minute in about 2 weeks ( *cough*clash of the titans *cough*) and knowing that there taking nine months to doing it right, that makes me happy actually! and like James Cameron said ( i think, sorry if im misquoting) it would take 6 months for a 3d conversion to be done right. and if clash took this long to do it, than they might have actually done it right. but i think ill still wait for a cuppl days to see it in 3d though, ill wait to here what the others say. but if the footage looks good, and im hear a trailer is coming soon, i will decide if it looks cool enough to see opening night ( ill probably do that so i get a good fanboy crowd) and then go to see it in a second viewing in 3d, or just wait a cuppl days for feed back and either see it in 3d that weekend if its good 3d feed back, or 2d if the reviews on the 3d are negative. im very interested to see how this turns out....
