Baz Luhrmann to shoot The Great Gatsby in Sydney
Today, it has been announced that Baz Luhrmann will indeed move forward on what he calls a "very personal project". And it will be shot in his hometown of Sydney, Australia.
The Great Gatsby will begin shooting later this year, with the director utilizing 3D for the first time in his career. Baz Luhrmann has been work shopping the script for months now. In March, he will continue with pre-production, and then in August he will shoot for seventeen weeks. This will be followed by 30 weeks of post-production work.
Australian Premier Kristina Keneally announced the decision to shoot in Sydney a "big win" for the country, stating the following.
"This comes at a good time for the film industry. Australia was thought to be losing international filmmaking due to the strong Aussie dollar. The Great Gatsby will be a boon for the NSW film industry, particularly given Baz Luhrmann 's commitment to maximizing use of local cast, crew and visual effects expertise."
While Warner Bros. is backing the movie, production will happen at Fox Studios in Sydney.
The Great Gatsby was released May 10th, 2013 and stars Lisa Adam, Frank Aldridge, Amitabh Bachchan, Steve Bisley, Richard Carter, Jason Clarke, Adelaide Clemens, Vince Colosimo. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann.

Kinetic I couldn't agree with you more. Anyone who's familiar with The Great Gatsby knows the Long Island, New York setting is as important to the story as any of it's main characters. Using Australia and CGI in place of the actual location has got to be one of the dumbest moves ever for a production such as this and judging from his choices, I'm starting to get the feeling Baz Luhrmann has no grasp on what Gatsby is. Not to mention, he has a tendency to be all style and no substance; I'm surprised Warner Brothers is banking on this guy to deliver considering what a boring disaster his last movie "Australia" turned out to be. Perhaps this project would have been better off kept on the shelf until the right director for the job came along.

@bane5000: *...If any movie deserves to be in 3D... it's a Baz Luhrmann film: they are always beautiful and stunning.
So, I guess that I agree with you. :P

Great news... Baz Luhrmann back on board officially! Gatsby does not seem like the kind of film that requires 3D, but I trust Luhrmann; I've liked all of his movies.

Kinetic
This should be filmed on Long Island, NY where the book takes place.
I grew up there, it will be such a visual turn off watching and knowing that it's not the real settings. Much of the book the setting is a main character....
