Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures have moved the release date of The Great Gatsby to Summer 2013. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, "Based on what we've seen, Baz Luhrmann's incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings F. Scott Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."

Kwan Vandenberg confirmed...

"Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected - making it in 3D - while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time. The responses we've had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think The Great Gatsby will be the perfect summer movie around the world."

From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker has created his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.

The Great Gatsby was released May 10th, 2013 and stars Lisa Adam, Frank Aldridge, Amitabh Bachchan, Steve Bisley, Richard Carter, Jason Clarke, Adelaide Clemens, Vince Colosimo. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann.

WTF? I really hate when this happens. Can't film companies just stick to their original release date? At least THE MASTER moved up in release, but I hate it when release dates get pushed back. So disappointing.

They'll realize how bad of an idea this is when they remember this is a classy Winter film and not summer blockbuster fodder.

Weird. I thought it felt more like a December release.

I was never a fan of the novel but that might be because I was forced to read it in Jr High. This looks really good however and I adore Carey Mulligan. I pretty much see everything she is in ANd she looks fantastic here.

The 3D however is a head scratcher to me. Like @rufio said, it seems like they are just going after the money. This just does not seem like a movie that needs 3D. I am still excited to see it though.

not to say this can't contend for awards, it sounds like WB is going after $$ over acclaim, hoping the 3D buzz and summer blockbuster push might help bring in more $. either that or the positive "responses" are not so positive and they are going in to spin mode trying to get him more time to make some edits.

I understand why, but a movie like this is better for the Holiday season than summer.

". . . we think The Great Gatsby will be the perfect summer movie around the world." Translation:

It's not going to do itself any favors in terms of maximizing awards potential by coming out late in the year. In any event, clear the way for some Django!!!

@thedude1 I agree, with a film like this 3D is pointless

Crap! I really wanted to see this at Christmas. The trailer does absolutely nothing for me but Luhrmann trailers never do. After I see his movies they are always a million times better than they looked in the trailer!

So... What they're saying is it's no longer an award contender and better off being a 3D heavy popcorn flick?
