The Girl Who Played With Fire still moving ahead at Sony
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of several movies that opened in theaters over the holiday season, and it has earned just over $60 million since its release on December 20. Those numbers aren't as high as studio execs would have liked, which has lead to speculation that the inevitable sequel, The Girl Who Played with Fire, may not happen.

A Sony rep shot down those rumors earlier today, insisting that the sequel is still moving forward.

"[Dragon Tattoo] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book."

Steven Zaillian, who adapted The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo from Stieg Larsson's novel, is currently writing the script for The Girl Who Played with Fire. However, David Fincher has not decided yet if he will return to direct The Girl Who Played with Fire.

Stars Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig have deals in place for The Girl Who Played with Fire, and it is said that Sony is targeting a late 2013 release date for the sequel.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released December 21st, 2011 and stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer, Joely Richardson, Yorick van Wageningen, Steven Berkoff. The film is directed by David Fincher.

The Girl Who Played with Fire comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig. The film is directed by David Fincher.

To date, Dragon has made 62 million domestically and 12 million internationally, but so far it's only been released in 5 or 6 countries.

Very interesting I'm concerned though about what Fincher has stated that if he isn't allowed to film the 2nd and 3rd book back to back, that he won't pursue them because he see it as a waste of time, production value and budget...

So i guess we will have to wait and see what comes out of this

@2movieguys - To answer oplev's question, the reason why you would remake it is for the very reason of what is now available in theaters around the world. While I really like Oplev's swedish version of the film, Finchers version absolutely blows it away in every way imaginable, including cinematography, lighting, pacing, etc.
This goes back to one of my earlier posts, which I still stand by....in which I said "if you give a hundred directors the exact same script, you will still get a hundred very different films". That's why I have absolutely NO problem with remakes.....because for every nine out of ten films that you remake that fail, that one other one will be a masterpiece that absolutely dominates the "original".

And, yes, it's made $60 million domestically *thus far*, but that doesn't include the foreign market, which is currently at $12 million. Therefore, its at $72 million and still going strong....and its been out for less than two weeks.
But here's the real kicker.....this film will be released in 73 countries worldwide. As of right now, January 3rd, it has only been released in 13 of those countries around the world. Most of the countries will receive this film on January 12th. Therefore, this film hasn't even begun to make it's money, yet. It will definitely make back it's budget with ease, plus a LOT more.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - $90 million project - has only grossed $60 million in the U.S. so far as of 01/03/2012!

    ....Love this quote:

Niels Arden Oplev, the director of the 2009 original Swedish film adaptation, has been quoted as saying, "Why would they remake something when they can just go see the original?"

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I agree, but I don't think he wants to come back. If it was something he really wanted to do, he would have signed on already.

I'm just saying that whether they want to or not, they may be forced to go another direction. And if that's the case, there are only a handful of names that could come in and be an adequate replacement.

@thedude-abides -- Good point, but in my opinion, I think David Fincher is absolutely perfect for this material. So, why settle for less?

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Yeah, I wouldn't look forward to it either...unless they got another top flight director to take the reigns.

@thedude-abides -- If he doesn't come back, I don't even think I'll look forward to seeing it. On the other hand, if he does come back; It will be my most anticipated movie.

Let's all pray he comes back.

Word-of-mouth will keep the box-office pedal down on Fincher's masterpiece, putting to bed all the premature naysayers who came out of the woodwork based on only one weekend.

That said, I'd like to address the Sony rep: The rumor you're shooting down is a product of your unwise move to release this film around Christmas. Maybe now, moron, it'll sink in that positioning your film for the sole purpose of winning an Oscar wasn't such a good idea.

    @thejoker-16 - I know, right?!

He's attached to all the one's I posted EXCEPT for The Devil in the White City.....that was just me wishful thinking. However, in reality, its not at all unrealistic to think that Leonardo would reach out to someone like Fincher, who has an amazing background with thrillers, to make one of his dream projects (and mine) come to life. Considering it's Leo's first "true" bad guy role, a serial killer at that, I would think he wants someone he can trust behind the lens to make it special. Fincher is the guy! So, yeah, I hope they make that happen!

  16. K-Man

@shuabert - Yeah, he was attached to a Heavy Metal film a couple years back, and still may very well be, but I'm pretty sure that film died out when his plate started overflowing. The last time I remember them reporting on that was sometime back in 2010. I'm pretty sure once the Dragon Tattoo films came into play, plus all the others he's attached to......he probably just said the hell with it.

But that's just a guess. Who knows, maybe it will still happen?

@k-man I thought a while ago Fincher also announced plans to do a Heavy Metal remake. What happened to that project? Not that I care about seeing a Heavy Metal remake, but I would be interested to see Fincher try his hand at animation.

This is great news.....but its only truly great if Fincher is coming back. That man is a genius and he made GWTDT what it is (dark, brutal, smart and a cunning thriller that is beautiful to watch). If they replace him, I fear this series could come crumbling down.
I really hope he decides to come back but I'm not 100% sure that he will. He's got SO many other GREAT projects in the pipeline right now, including 20,000 leagues under the sea, Rendezvous with Rama, Black Hole and Cleopatra, that I'm not sure he wants to give those up.

However, I'd be willing to bet that Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are pleading with Fincher, right about now, to come back and direct the sequels.

Time will tell. However, if I had my way, I'd love for him to do 20,000 Leagues next, then film the sequels back to back, then do Devil in the White City with Leonardo DiCaprio, then Rendezvous With Rama with Morgan Freeman (who has been attached for a long time) and THEN do Cleopatra with Angelina Jolie.

I'd also REALLY like to see Fincher return to an extremely dark sci-fi film, in the vein of the Ridley Scott's upcoming Prometheus & the Alien series (which he is obviously familiar with having done Alien 3).....however, I would like to see something completely original.

    uh, *sigh* wishful thinking!

That would be a hell of a lineup for the next 5 or 6 years for Fincher!

I hope Fincher comes back to direct, he did a great job. He should film the two sequels back-to-back to save some time and then get on another project quickly afterwards. Actually he should've shot all 3 films back to back for a release every Christmas.

Fincher has to direct the last two. It's impossible for me to see another director take his place. Johnny Depp never starred in sequels until Jack Sparrow came into his life. Now that Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander have entered Fincher's life, he should finish the trilogy.
