Warner Bros. has issued an October 19, 2012 release date for its upcoming crime drama The Gangster Squad. As of now, The Gangster Squad will go up against The Big Wedding, starring Robert De Niro, and the Untitled David Chase Project on October 19, 2012. You can read the official synopsis for The Gangster Squad below.

"Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and-if he has his way-every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It's enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop...except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen's world apart."

Ruben Fleischer is directing The Gangster Squad from a screenplay by former LAPD officer Will Beall. Production is currently under way in Los Angeles.

Gangster Squad comes to theaters September 7th, 2012 and stars Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, Holt McCallany, Emma Stone. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer.

LA Noir? 1949? Gangsters? Crooked cops & politicians? With Penn, Brolin, Ribisi, & Gosling? I'm there.

@zanyzap: Wow, that's just sad. He could easily have gotten a role here but I guess being as rich as he is that it just doesn't matter to him anymore.

I love the gangster genre. @dan1: Star power to the max. I also love how the film is going up against Robert De Niro... in a chick flick with Katherine Heigl.
