Thank you delgren....finally someone who agrees with me about digital. And yes they should have used film. Any format would have been fine especially in comparison to the CineAlta, I would prefer 35mm but thats just me....anything besides digital, which is raping cinema as we know it.

That first shot of Johnny Dep waking up is horrendous, looks like something out of a B-movie.

It's definitely hard to take in. I didn't know they were using the cinealta, I agree bad choice. They should have atleast used something with a CMOS sensor in it, but I guess they wanted that realistic element. Probably would have looked a lot better using 16mm film and some wide lenses. The sound wasn't all that great either. the only thing that sounded good was the machine guns.

This is pure tragedy! This movie could have been an all time classic but I am not even going to waste my time seeing it on the big screen anymore because the Sony CineAlta F23 digital camera which was used is so freakin ugly and distracting! Looks like a f*ckin discovery channel "reenactment" that you see on their biographies! Oh and for those of you who dont know jack about cameras, that is the same camera used in the filming of Cloverfield....which if anyone remembers correctly, was only used because it replicated a high-def home video camera!
    SO FREAKIN TERRIBLE!
Unbelievable cast, great director (who makes stupid decisions) and I'm sure a fantastic and it all gets ruined by a digital camera! What were you thinking Michael Mann? I have absolutely no clue what anyone would find appealing about the look of this film.....excuse me...video.

A strange way of filming for a period film, the director used the same technique for Collateral and Miami Vice but they are based in our days even though Ali has a similar touch to it, and that is period even though more recent, Mel Gibson's Apocalypto was filmed like that too, I'm interested to see this anyway with Johnny Depp being in it and with it been based in the 30's, for once he has a short hair cut
