The First Avenger: Captain America to Begin Shooting in June

In a story from Fangoria, Marvel Studios is aiming to start The First Avenger: Captain America this June according to director Joe Johnston (The Wolfman).

Here is the tidbit from the Fangoria story where Jackson discusses that project:

Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. "By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three," recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of The First Avenger: Captain America, which he's readying for a June start.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy's earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment... Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the 'Super-Soldier Serum' and bombarded by 'vita-rays.' Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and leader of the Avengers.

We will report more production related information as it comes in. The First Avenger: Captain America is slated be released on July 22, 2011.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

Well at least we agree about Worthington not matching. And authenticity is not casting a super soldier alone. Cap is much much more than that. Possible an unknown is out there that fits him perfectly but they need star power of some kind to sell this movie more because not many people want to see a man wearing a flag on his body. Still whoever they cast, I look forward to this with extreme enthusiasm.

Sub Mariner makes the most sense here, especially because FUX has been circling a FF reboot. I really just wish FUX would just lose all rights to Marvel movies.

Worhtington isn't the Steve Rogers type. Just a little too gritty. Cap has always been deceptively squeaky.

I'm not a big fan of Capt. America, but if the whole movie is set during WWII it would be pretty cool (at least it would be diferent from most SH movies).

Bud i brought up Sub-Mariner on another board along time ago and asked who we think should play him if he does make a cameo, and everyone ignored me. so i won't ignore u.

It would be sweet if we got at least a shot or two or even a battle with the Invaders, that would be awesome. and I would pick Hugo Weaving as Sub-Mariner. but he isn't that buff so idk.

and just to repeat myself, idc if the actor is American or not but Worthington has been in three huge blockbuster and is starting to get over exposed almost. plus i just don't think he fits Cap

Dude, authenticity would be casting a super-soldier. At some point you have to let go of these superficial qualifications, and make the best, most logical choice for actor.

halo_wars it is a passion for the role, I mean I know some actors change their persona fit to certain roles due to passion (look at Gary Oldman) but it is also the match and fit of the actor to his/her role or at least a similarity. You cant have Obama play Cap. Or Harrison Ford play Blade. Same as Captain America. The actor needs to have certain similarities with Steve Rogers.

An actors passion for the role is the true authenticity not the fact that he is or isnt American.

Wow. You are thinking of publicity not authenticity. I understand the man can act, and hes a fan, and hes super cool. I basically described my next door neighbor. Only difference is Worthington is in a lot of big picture movies. Personally he is not the Cap we all know from the comics. At all.

bud2fresh I know you are not a Cap fan because if you we're you can see the way he has been put in ink, especially in the last few years (save when he died), Worthington is a far cry from the likes of Steve Rogers. Matt Damon look wise is closest. And they can make people look younger. That's not a problem. We might as well go with a no name which I would really honestly be fine with other than the fact it wouldn't sell as well with common audiences.

It all relates to the "American Dream". The "American Dream" is having the same opportunity among everybody. Worthington is a great fit because he would somewhat be proof of the "American Dream" if he is casted. Just think of all the publicity that could be generated not only for his nationality but his talent.

At Jokers WIlds, relating to this comment:

"@Comrade: And sam worthington won't be recognized as a blue monkey cat alien f*cktard thing?
Idk if you're a supporter of Sam W. as Cap. and if you're not, I'm with you lol. But really, reading half the other choices, I think chris Pine is the perfect fresh face for this role."

You did get ahead of yourself, and you put words in my mouth, which made you look like a hysterical idiot, but then you acknowledged what you were doing, so, pass.

However, as much as I agree the Pine would do great, YOU need to be open minded to the fact that the studio may not make a decision you initially like or understand. However, I agree that avoiding a decision to cast an international as Captain America is a mistake. Think about how multi-national America already is. If he looks like a good Rogers and CAN ACT WELL, sign him up

An accent or nationality shouldnt be used as an excuse to determine whether or not an actor is fit for the role. Accents can worked on. like halo said look at what Ledger did. I think this movie would be benefit from having Worthington play the the role of Cap. He's got passion for the character, he's a proven actor, and the media gets a story about an Australian cast as Captain America which will more than likely garner more attention and sell more tickets at the box office. I think if they wanted to get one of those high priced American actors such as Pitt, Damon, or DiCaprio the studios would have already signed on of them already. People go to the theater to watch movies and be entertained. Nobody is going to see this movie and say to to themselves throughout the movie "This guy isnt American. Why is he playing this role?"

I love these retarded comments about needing an American to play Captain America. No matter who plays him it will be an American in the movie. They are Actors... Its like saying it will never work having an Aussie play Wolverine...oh wait that was an american in the movie right...and people just watch for the pure entertainment. If Sam Worthington is CA and you watch it saying hes not american in real life so this is a bad movie then you are both a terrible critic of movies and a tard.

the only thing against all three of them, which u pointed out. is that they r all too old. Cap is supposed to start out as a twenty something scrawny kid almost. they r goin to have to employ the same techniques David Fincher used in Benjamin Button if they use any actor over 30.

  20. The Narrator: The Better Man

Jeez. Why not make it Captain f*cking Australia because Worthington (all of you seem to have a hard on for him) can not hide his accent. He is a good actor but he should not be Cap. I can partially see him do the Avengers scream but still, he is not a good old fashioned American. At least Mel grew into his accent. Look at The Patriot. I mean he did pretty good but look at how long it was from when he first started. And even if Worthington could become Cap it would not fit him. He'd do better than Matthew Mcconaughey but next to choices like Pitt, Mortenson, and Damon he falls short in the authenticity.

Like I said before in my post below:

"I would prefer either Matt Damon or Viggo Mortenson. Problem is both might be a bit too old. But Damon, is broad shouldered, has the 50's look, has dealt with amnesia, can fight work his ass off, and is pretty physically fit for the role already. Mortenson, if you have seen a History of Violence or Eastern Promises looks good with blonde hair, is the right height and can definitely bulk up. He loves doing his owen fight scenes and gets involved in character another plus. Plus I can see him doing the Avengers yell. And most importantly both of these actors can act (don't go saying damon can't act cuz you know he can.) Bad Pitt; as someone pointed out, I think it was Vis; wouldn't be minded either."

i completely see ppl's points about an American playing the role. but i honestly don't care, if they can do an american accent that is good enough. Either way i don't want Worthington.

I still think Matt Damon could do it or even the main character from Mad Men, i think his name is Jon Ham, but he is a lil old for the part.and seriously don't even bother commenting on the fact that he has black hair, anyone who uses hair color as a reason someone can't play a part is retarded. its called hair dye.

No, no, no. An American DOES need to play Captain AMERICA. Notice the keyword. If you have a superhero who's name is Capt. America, it would make a whole lot of damn sense to cast an American.

  29. The Narrator: The Better Man

Guys I strongly and strongly support an American playing the role of Captain f*cking America. the studios will do anything that draws but If I remember correctly the director said he wants an american. So I say narrow it down to that mates.

Jokes_wild, Pine would not be Cap. He wouldn't want to be. He is very particular on his roles, and he likes sick demented roles (Smoking Aces) or things he can make his own. Star Trek was a slight exception because he was like that a bit anyway, and he gets paid well. And if you read the books, he is too young for Cap anyhow, at least not in the time zone we most see him in the Avengers. As a sickly young boy and a younger fresh Cap in the beginning of WW2 maybe/sure. I can see him with the armor on but I can not see him yelling "Avengers Assemble!" which is a huge thing.

Which like I said I would prefer either Matt Damon or Viggo Mortenson. And most importantly both of these actors can act (don't go saying damon can't act cuz you know he can.) Bad Pitt; as someone pointed out, I think it was Vis; wouldn't be minded either.

However when all is said and done the studios will never see this, and we are blatantly arguing on who they should cast like ants screaming up at the moon. So in the end this is just one internet dick measuring contest on who has the better ideas and whose picks fits more.
