Mark Wahlberg says there will only be one sequel of The Fighter
"I got bit by the bug, and now I'm trying to plant the idea in everyone's head that we should do - not five or six Fighters like Rocky - but one more because the big thing that Micky Ward was famous for was his three epic battles with Arturo Gatti. So we're talking about possibly taking one more run at it."
The actor first revealed his plans for a sequel earlier this month. It seems that the three Arturo Gatti fights would be handled all within one movie. Mark Wahlberg also said most of the cast would likely return.
"Yeah. Everybody had such an amazing experience making the movie that I can't imagine they wouldn't want to go back. But it's still kind in the early stages."
It seems both Micky Ward and his brother Dickie Ward, the real-life inspirations for The Fighter, also want a sequel to happen.
"They're both thrilled by the possibility. I just keep getting the phone calls. From Micky, yeah, saying, 'Make sure you get it done.'"
The Fighter was released December 10th, 2010 and stars Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, Dendrie Taylor, Jack McGee, Jenna Lamia, Bianca Hunter. The film is directed by David O. Russell.

@thedude-abides - I don't agree with your assumptions on who will or won't return and your reasonings behind them. But I think it's safe to say, that if Mark can't get his supporting cast back, they won't go ahead with the sequel just to show the fights. They know they're going to need more than that to sell it.

I agree with you completely @dan1. The Fighter was an "ok" film, at best. It wasn't even the film that made it good, per say, it was the performances from the actors. The actors are what made the film engaging and somewhat entertaining, not the fights. Without all of that, does anyone really care about the fights? No.

I'm not so sure this should happen. At first when they released the first news article of making a seque I found it interesting but now it just shouldn't happen

While watching The Fighter, did anyone else think to themselves "Man, I can't wait for the sequel"? No? Me neither. Go do your stupid, blasphemous Uncharted movie, Mark, and shut the hell up.

I don't think they should make a sequel, but at least they aren't going for a franchise.

If it was done really well, maybe, but I just don't think it's needed.

@zanyzap - EXACTLY! to focus a movie on the fights changes the WHOLE DYNAMIC of the movie. please don't do it...

What made The Fighter such a good movie was the focus on family, not the actual fights, and with the relationship between Micky and Dickie (and others) resolved already, I don't see the potential or even the need for a sequel. Let it lie...

Nope. 1 was good enough. Don't kill a good thing...

yeah i dont see this going well. this is one of those times where the IDEA is better than the execution. i really think they should just leave this alone. the fighter was such a great movie on its own that forcing a sequel just seems unwise.

Sorry, Mark, they won't come back. At least not Bale or Leo. Well, Leo might. Judging by her Oscar speech, she doesn't seem like the brightest star in the sky. But, Bale surely won't come back to play a character in which he already won every award for playing.
The ceiling has already been reached, and the only possible place left to go would be down, which is exactly why Bale won't - and why Leo shouldn't - come back. They've already achieved all there is to achieve. Why risk diminishing the roles that won them an Oscar?
