The Fighter 2 Might Get David O. Russell Script

A sequel to The Fighter is still a ways off, although it seems director David O. Russell is looking to both write and direct The Fighter 2.

The Fighter was David O. Russell's first project that he didn't write himself. Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy, and Eric Johnson all collaborated on the Oscar-nominated screenplay.

Here's what David O. Russell had to say about writing The Fighter 2.

"I would do it whenever anyone says they're ready. I'm ready to write it. I would definitely want to be involved in that."

Earlier this month, Mark Wahlberg revealed that he wants to use The Fighter 2 to explore Micky Ward's trilogy of fights with Arturo Gatti. David O. Russell also wants to show the Arturo Gatti fights, as well as look deeper into Micky Ward's family; specifically his sisters.

"I think Micky's story has a lot of heart whichever way you cut it. You'd go towards the Gatti fights and you could go into the history of the family more. I really like the sisters."

It isn't clear when David O. Russell will start writing The Fighter 2 or when production might start.

The Fighter was released December 10th, 2010 and stars Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, Dendrie Taylor, Jack McGee, Jenna Lamia, Bianca Hunter. The film is directed by David O. Russell.

@nautical05 @ownsin I don't think so. The only complaint most people who know the Mickey Ward story had was there wasn't any Ward/Gatti fight footage. That's why this film is getting made. The Ward/Gatti fights are considered some of the best boxing matches EVER.

No sequel is needed... It is fine as a stand alone film. If a sequel is made, I really have no interest in delving deeper into the lives of his sisters; they served their purpose in the first film, yet they irritated me immensely.

The interesting thing will be if they can keep the budget low. The Fighter's budget was a very reasonable $25 million.
Sequels can often double and triple in cost, and The Fighter did well domestically but didn't blow up the box office. Plus, it had all that Oscar buzz, which more than likely led to the majority of it's ticket sales. Internationally The Fighter barely broke even.

If they stop it at THE FIGHTER 2 and only show the Mickey Ward vs. Arturo Gatti fights that would be cool. They probably wouldn't even need Bale as the story really is Wards relationship with Gatti. The only problem was... the first fight was the most epic/cinematic. The other 2 fights were basically boxing lessons from Gatti to Ward.

It could work if they approach it like an HBO series (which would fit considering the first one), and not a sequel movie. Ward's family was very funny and kept the movie afloat.

Maybe if they keep the focus on family, and less on the fights, but I think it'll be difficult to pull off without rehashing the themes and the problems of the first film. I don't like the idea of franchising the story.

If David O. Russell's behind the camera. I'm there, even though it deserves to stand alone as a classic. I love a good ol' fashioned boxing movie.
