The Devil Inside earns $16.8 million on opening day
The first real big release weekend of the year has kicked off things in fashion, with the low budge horror film The Devil Inside earning an unprecedented, and unexpected, $16.8 million on Friday, its day of release ($2 million of which came from midnight screenings).
Paranormal Activity 3 was the last horror film to open this big, which was way back in October. Paramount released both films, and it looks like they have another potential franchise on their hands.
The Devil Inside was acquired by the studio for $1 million dollars, with a little more than $15 million being spent on promoting this faux documentary about the world of underground exorcisms. While the movie has been garnering horrible reviews, and even disdain from audience members for its abrupt ending, The Devil Inside is looking to pull in over $30 million, which sails way past its purported budget.
We will have the final box office numbers for you tomorrow, which should go to prove that theater attendance is up +18% from this time last year. 2012 may just shape up to be a very lucrative year at the movies.
The Devil Inside was released January 6th, 2012 and stars Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth, Ionut Grama, Suzan Crowley, Bonnie Morgan, Brian Johnson, Preston James Hillier. The film is directed by William Brent Bell.

It's definitely sad that people are choosing these sh*tty movies over the good stuff. Paramount is gonna get away with what they wanted which was making this their new Paranormal Activity; no budget, big revenue.
I actually saw a free press screening of the film on Thursday and it wasn't even worth the 2 dollars I paid for the bus ride. The film is absolutely awful, the ending doesn't even try to be a twist ending or anything curious like people think, it just looks like they ran out of budget and ideas and ended the film there. Like if Cloverfield would've ended after the Statue of Liberty gets decapitated or something. It just feels like half a movie, and trust me, nobody will care about the other half. Don't waste your time on this one folks.

Have no interest in seeing this sh*t, but goes to show you that people want to see movies that scare. I mean people at my school that are considered the "jocks" were talking about this movie and saying how they are want to see it. Cheap horror movie with a newish genre and a different style will sell. I just personalty wait for a movie to worth watching in 2012 which comes for me next week with Contraband, say what you want about Walberg but its looks great, but a course we saw see

@2movieguys Actually, I think the bad review is helping this film... People are curious about how "bad" it really is. I'm really curious about the ending... how bad could it be?

I'm hearing very bad things from people who actually wanted to see The Devil Inside. Hopefully that leads to it making less than its projected 34 million dollars this weekend.
Anyway I'm actually excited about going to the movies next week. Finally seeing MI4 and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

I'd rather have movie attendance low then have it high because of people seeing sh*t movies.

Per Rotton Tomatoes: The Devil Inside is a cheap, choppy unscary mess, featuring one of the worst endings in recent memory.
With reviews like this I stay away!

...Well no surprise since I read in LA Times that the audience was 54 percent male and 59 percent under the age of 25.... !!
The found-footage genre is getting old!!

I guess a lot of pople wasted money and got ripped off!!
Everything I read or heard about this film is just trash ..and a wsate of money!
1st clue that the film was going to be bad, it was no screened for critics "before" the midnight screening to stop bad press before the general public wasted money!

Well, it's good that the attendance has gone up, but lots of people watch the wrong movies. But I watch everything so I'm neutral

This is not surprising. Every Sunday I get on here and find inferior movies atop the box office over superior ones. Why should this movie be any different? I've said it before and I'll say it again: it's just a testament of where we are as a society when the best films of each year can't even manage a wide release, and crap like this reigns supreme week after week.
