Universal delays The Dark Tower production until February 2012
Production was scheduled to start sometime this summer, although Universal has pushed the start date to February 2012. The producers and studio are currently working out a plan to bring the budget numbers down on this sprawling adaptation, which includes three movies and two TV seasons, which will air between the movies.
However, Universal must give a green light to The Dark Tower by July, or else the rights revert back to author Stephen King, director Ron Howard, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, and producer Brian Grazer.
We reported last month that Javier Bardem will star in The Dark Tower as Roland Deschain, the last in a line of gunslingers who heads out in search of The Dark Tower in a final effort to save mankind.
The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

The rights being reverting back to King, Howard, Goldsman, & Grazer might not be such a bad thing imo. Guess we'll find out in July on that front.

@skywise I agree with you on the budget thing. Back when this was first announced, someone on this site talked about how this movie would need a HUGE budget for all the sets and special effects. I disagreed. With the exception of some of the more elaborate set pieces like the Tower itself, this is basically a post-apocalyptic western, so I picture it looking something like The Book of Eli or The Road. Obviously the modern New York City portions should just be shot in New York City, with some minor tweaks during the NYC of the 60s portions. Yes, there will be special effects, but this isn't the Lord of the Rings.

Thank god its not being dropped and trimming the budget is a brilliant idea. The lower the budget the more creative the director/producers have to get. This might actually work in favor for this series.
But i couldnt agree with @shuabert more about it being an HBO series. Just look at what they are doing with Game Of Thrones (and all their other greatofferings).

I wouldn't be to upset if the rights went back up for grabs. I'd rather see this at Time Warner than Universal, because I think the show would be better suited for HBO than NBC.
