Russell Crowe may play Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower
Javier Bardem was long attached to play the nomadic gunslinger, even after Universal Pictures dropped the project last July. The actor is no longer involved, but producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer have been discussing the role with Russell Crowe. Nothing is official yet, but the A-list star's potential attachment may be a key component in getting this languishing project off the ground.
The Dark Tower was initially set up as a trilogy at Universal Pictures, with two limited-run TV series' to air between the movies on NBC. Last October, we reported that HBO will produce the TV portion of this sprawling adaptation of Stephen King's seven-part novel series.
The story centers on Roland Deschain, the last in a long line of gunfighters, who journeys to The Dark Tower in a last-ditch effort to save humanity.
The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

I would be disappointed if Russell Crowe plays Roland. Bardem wouldn't have been my first choice but he was a far better fit than Mr. Crowe.

Crowe? Seriously? That's casting at it's worst. Iain Glen would be a better choice.

This has been Ron Howards Dream project for like 5 - 7 years I say let him do it I really think he will give it his all. and Russel Crowe is also a yes he can be roland he has the potential. all i ask is that this gets done right especialy wizard and glass and The waste lands they are my 2 favorite chapters in the saga and I believe every human should read those 2 books atleast if not all 7 books.

goldsman is a pretty good writer and has some good credits to his name, howard is a good director i dont see anything wrong with them making this movie. i dont know about javier bardem as roland he has that accent and i havent seen anything where he doesnt have it. crowe or viggo mortensen would be better in my eyes.

I don't mind Crowe, but Bardem makes me feel somewhat uneasy when I watch him on some of his movies. I believe his acting of Roland alone would've made this an epic series.

I'm fine with Crowe in the role, though I would prefer Bardem or especially Mortensen. I would be very surprised if they get Crowe to commit to TV, though. It doesn't seem like his thing.

Wow! That is world's better casting than Bardem. Javier is a great actor, but not even close to correct casting for Roland. Crowe or Viggo Mortensen I could totally buy, though.

@mcleve02 True, but Crowe can pull off the gunslinger act I liked him in 3:10 to Yuma

I personally think the character can be played by Javier or Jerry Dean Morgan. The only thing that Ron has going for him now is the Angles & Demons trilogy.
All I want is 7 films and no TV series.

no Javier- no Dark Tower- Crowe has not got that rugged look- he would just klook like his self in 3:10 to Yuma and i dont think he has that demeaning presense or aura that Bardem can give

if not Javier, Russell Crowe will be a great choice. I just want to see it written well, and not crammed into a short span. This series is so epic it needs at least a trilogy, if not more.
