The Dark Tower Heads to HBO Says Brian Grazer

The Dark Tower TV series is heading to HBO
Ever since Universal Pictures dropped the multi-platform project The Dark Tower, director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer have been seeking out a new home for this sprawling Stephen King adaptation. The original plan, when the project was at Universal, was to have a TV series run between The Dark Tower movie trilogy, although the budget proved to be too much for Universal and NBC to handle. Producer Brian Grazer recently revealed that HBO is coming on board to produce the TV portion of this epic adaptation. Here's what he had to say below.

"We're going to do [The Dark Tower] with HBO. We'll do the TV with HBO, and we'll do the movie with... to be determined. We'll do it right."

The producer also said they have been cutting costs to get the budget down, much like Lone Ranger was forced to do before Disney gave it the green light.

"We're going to do that movie. We've lost $45 million out of the budget. When people say no to you enough, then you have to lose money, which we've done without harming the scope of the film."

We reported in August that Ron Howard and Brian Grazer are seeking independent financing for The Dark Tower, with hopes that a major studio will latch on after the funding is secured. Universal was both fully financing and distributing The Dark Tower movie trilogy and TV series when it was attached to the project.

The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

This is far better suited to HBO than it ever was to NBC. I'm thrilled at this news. To be honest, though, they could really just do the whole thing as a series, but I respect that they want to do this ambitious new thing of a movie/tv crossover. I'm game.

I also believe that with the exception of certain big set pieces, you CAN do this on a pretty small budget. It has a similar tone to something like The Book of Eli, because most of the world it takes place in is sort of destitute of life and post-apocalyptic. The entire Gunslinger, Wizard and Glass, and Wolves of the Calla are basically westerns, without many extravagant effects needed. I think it should turn out fine.

    Is Bardem still on board?

Awesome. Seinfeld aside, HBO is better than NBC when it comes to stuff like this.
