Javier Bardem officially cast as Roland Deschain
Javier Bardem has landed the lead role of Roland Deschain in Ron Howard's upcoming film adaptation of Stephen King's book series, The Dark Tower.

The deal is said to contain solidifying Bardem for 3 movies in the series, which will be followed up by a TV miniseries. A well-placed source confirmed The New York Post,

"Bardem has signed on to the first movie and the miniseries, but the intention is that he will star in all three movies and each of the TV series. It's an enormous deal for any actor, but Bardem was always the first choice."

The story follows "Gunslinger" Deschain as he travels through an Old West-like landscape in search of the mythical Dark Tower to save civilization.

The first movie is expected to go into production in September with Ron Howard directing and Brian Grazer producing.

The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

@Zak-F Roland is certainly not young in the novels. Besides, Bardem isn't old-looking.

I hope Ron Howard puts a little more heart into this than his last few efforts. Not that those movies were bad but this is something that obviously he is going to have to dedicate a LOT of time to. Plus there is a pretty huge fan base and everyone will be scrutinizing his every movie. Crosses fingers.

It's even better to hear that he will also be part of the miniseries instead of just getting another actor to do that and have Bardem only do the films.

Not my first choice, but I think Bardem will do the role proud. Every great actor has his Big Break and it looks like Bardem, deservingly so, will get his as well. Good luck!

@stiles Blaine is an integral part of the story and won't be getting the axe like Tom did. I just hope the producers and Ron Howard (whom I have very little faith in) realize that this is a series that can't get watered down in PG13-ness to make it appeal to a wider audience (i.e. kids) It's a hard story with some very adult themes that can't be omitted.

@stiles they have to have the train. Maybe not a self aware train but the mono must be part of the story, its how they get to topeka kansas. Tom Bombadill does not further the story in Lord of the Rings but serves as an unanswered mystery.

Yeah Clint Eastwood would have been great for that role too.

a slight aside, but - how the hell are they going to make Baline the Mono work on the big screen? The train might have to go the same way as Tom Bomberdil in LOTR.

Great actor, but when reading the books - the only man I could picture in my minds eye as Roland was Clint Eastwood. What a shame he's not 30 years younger
