The Dark Tower Dropped by Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures cuts ties with The Dark Tower
Universal Pictures is cutting loose the epic multi-platform project The Dark Tower, which was slated for release on May 17, 2013, although that seems unlikely now.

Back in May, there was a report that Universal was considering putting The Dark Tower in turnaround, since the budget had grown too big. A week later, it was reported that Universal pushed production back from a summer 2011 start to February 2012, with hopes to try and bring the budget down. Now it seems that the studio would only commit to the first movie, and not the TV series, which the filmmakers could not agree to. Back in April, Falling Skies writer-producer Mark Verheiden was hired to executive produce and write the TV portion of this sprawling endeavor.

Ron Howard will direct The Dark Tower from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, which is adapted from Stephen King's seven-book novel series. The story centers around Roland Deschain, the last in a nomadic line of gunslingers who sets off on a quest to find The Dark Tower in a last-ditch effort to save humanity.

The Dark Tower producers now face the arduous task of finding another financial backer for a series which spans three movies and two TV seasons.

The Dark Tower is in development . The film is directed by Ron Howard.

I never liked the idea of trying to make these films cheap anyway, they need to spend some money to make these books come alive on the big screen properly imo. As for the tv series, I'm on the fence about that but feel it could work if done the way Falling Skies and Walking Dead are being done, just not sure it's needed to make the films successful. They should hold out for the right people who will let them make it the right way.

I never liked the idea of a TV series.
Maybe in the far future but not now.

This needs to be a films franchise period.

@jimthar is correct but lets see what Ron can do for the first film. If it doesn't pan out then don't make another, if it is successful then let Ron do another.

Seven films by a combination of different directors would be better in the long run. Not just one, which would be too much for one director.

Scrap the Tv show and just do the movie and you are fine Mr. Howard. Let's hope that a studio picks up this idea eventually. It has potential to be good.

Well this doesnt surprise me. LOTR was a hardcore undertaking and a tremendous risk for that studio but it turned out brilliant. That was only 3 films tho. Here we are talking about years and years worth of movies and I was always skeptical about that from the beginning. As much as i love the books, i think there is so much in those storied that just wont translate well to the screen.

I hope they can find a financial backer but i think they will have to think a little less epic.

Can't really blame Universal here, do a movie that'll impress and you'll get all the sequels/seasons you need.

i never liked this stupid movies/tv/movies idea. it was stupid and disjointed from the beginning. it wouldn't please anyone and it'd be too hard to keep up with over the course of what should be 7 movies. it was a bad idea from the get-go. they need to give this to the harry potter people and do it properly over 7 movies. that is the only way this will work.
