The Dark Knight's Final Weekend Gross: $158.3 Million!

The Dark Knight still has the opening weekend box office record... but by a bigger margin. According to Variety, The Dark Knight's final opening weekend tally turned out to be $158.3 million, $3 million more than the initial estimate of $155.3 million.

The $158.3 million haul was more than enough to break Spider-Man 3's opening weekend record of $151.1 million last May. The records didn't stop there as the entire weekend broke the three-day combined record of more than $250 million, with The Dark Knight's total leading the way and Mamma Mia!'s second-place finish of $27.6 debut. That record was previously held by the July 7-9 2006 weekend, which took in $218.4 million altogether, where Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest led the way with a then-record opening weekend gross of $135.6 million.

The Dark Knight also broke records for the highest single day and highest opening day with a whopping $67.8 million. Part of that total was from midnight screenings, which accounted for $18.5 million, which itself broke the midnight screening record held by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith's $16.9 million from midnight shows in 2005. The Dark Knight was also released in a record-breaking rollout in 4,336 theaters and it's said that the Christopher Nolan film could gross as much as $220 million by the end of the week.

The Dark Knight was released July 18th, 2008 and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Gabriela Curnen. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

"The Dark Knight" .. starring Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhall, Michael Caine and the late Heath Ledger, has already made more money in its biggest day (66.4 m dollars on Friday) than "Hanc*ck", "WALL-E" and "Kung-Fu Panda", to name three recent supersize hits, made in their respective opening weekends.
