The Dark Knight Sells 3 Million DVD's on First Day of Release

The Dark KnightNot that this should come as any surprise, but The Dark Knight's first day on DVD and Blu-ray was a rousing success. According to The New York Times, consumers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom have purchased over 3 million copies of The Dark Knight on DVD in the first day of release, December 9.

In addition to those mammoth sales figures, The Dark Knight Blu-ray sold an additional 600,000 copies on the first day, and it was said that the BD sales were expected to eclipse 1 million units by Saturday. That figure shattered the previous first-day BD sales record of 250,000, set a few months ago by Iron Man.It was also said that BD sales were particularly strong in grocery stores, indicating the format is moving beyond the early-adopter stage.

"Numbers like these in this economic environment firmly establish Blu-ray as where consumers are headed," said Kevin Tsujihara, president of Warner Brothers Home Entertainment.

Same with Slysnide and Ed. I can't afford a bluray yet, so it was a bit junk to find the two disc edition disappointing. I can't see how the film was made, just a few production videos, Imax scenes, and the making of the music, and the news casts. I mean I finished it well within an hour. But the movie was worth it.

3 million dvd sales still trumps 600 thousand blu-ray sales, contrary to what W.B.H.E. President Kevin Tsujihara says. Hey, here's an idea! Maybe we dvd owners can write him with a petition saying we're disappointed that he signed off on an essentially bare-bones special edition release of TDK! (my example of sarcasm of course). I mean even though they had the 6 IMAX scenes as originally formatted for the IMAX camera available on Disc 2, it's not the same or anywhere near it really if you don't own a blu-ray. Just thought I'd throw that point out there. Oh, and I got the 2-Disc Steelbook version yesterday morning.
