The Dark Knight Score Back in Oscar Race

Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard are back in consideration for an Oscar nomination, according to Variety.

The Music Branch Executive Committee of the Academy has reversed its Nov. 10 decision declaring their score for The Dark Knight ineligible for the 2008 Academy Awards.

The score was disqualified due to five names being listed as composers on the music cue sheet.

After reviewing information submitted by the affected parties, the committee concluded that two, Zimmer and Howard, were responsible for the score's authorship.

Neither nomination ballots nor lists of eligible scores had been distributed so there is no impact on the actual voting process.

    Titanic was nominated for 13 Academy Awards; LOTR: The Return of the King was nominated for 11. Both earned 11 awards (most ever tied with Ben-Hur); There's been six films with nominations; and around twenty with more than ten {I think..}. I hope The Dark Knight can join the list...

    And if it t wins 10, or even gets nominated for 10, I'll do more than just scream for joy. I'll...............................(better not post that online. just kidding).

    Sadly, I don't think it'll win 10, but one can hope!

    And (shawn), I'm dead certain Heath will be in the Supporting category, and by the looks of the films coming out Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt) might be his competition (not sure who else will be in the category). But like you said, if he's in the Best Actor category, I don't think he'll have a chance.

    But as we've seen before, there's always room for surprises.

    Hans Zimmer is a hack, so it really doesn't matter to me if he wins or not. He's known for stealing his students work, so to me, he doesn't deserve it. Don't get me wrong it's a great score, but he right people should be getting credit for it and not Zimmer.

    Heath Ledger is a lock if they put him as Best Supporting Actor, but if they put him in the Best Actor category he'll have to contend with Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Will Smith (Seven Pounds).

    Best Picture is a possibility because Return of the King was based on a popular book, and took in record box office numbers. However, Return of the King swept the oscars as a consolation prize due to the fact that Peter Jackson and the crew completed such a huge undertaking with the films.

    That being said, I think that Darren Aronofsky will take Best Director for The Wrestler, which will also win best picture and Mickey Rourke will probably take best actor.

    We shall see though!

    I'm putting my money on Heath Ledger for Best Actor...I don't know how far The Dark Knight will go because because it isn't "traditional" like every other Oscar film seems to be, but I'm betting Ledger will have a nice round.

    Zany if it gets 10 it will be right behind LOTR: The Return of the King, and Titanic, the two highest awarded films. If that happens, I will scream if joy. But I doubt that... Like everyone says they will go with a more traditional film, sadly.

    That great news!
    I would love to see The Dark Knight win Best Picture; though I haven't seen many of the other "possible contenders" coming out this month. The Academy will most likely pick more "traditional" films over a "superhero flick" (But a "superhero flick" is a bit of an understatement for such a well crafted film).

    Possible Nominations:
    Best Picture (maybe...depends), Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (maybe), Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Makeup (maybe...a lot of strong contenders), Best Original Score (Now seems possible), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

    You can write The Dark Knight in ink on the Artistic/Technical nominations, the others remain to be seen. By my account, the maximum nominations is 10 (For Sure: 5-6).

    I look forward to January, and the release of the nominations!

    Gosh, clockwork... Why so serious?

    I never said "the Best Picture award only goes to masterpieces". Through the perspective of a member of the Academy, a war-love story in early 20th century Australia and a born old man growing younger with age would be more appealing to the artsy "acolytes" of Hollywood than a super hero movie. However, there IS a first for everything. Return of the King won almost everything it was nominated for, while it's predecessors were nominated too, and left in the dust. There's still hope, Clocky my friend, but I'm not counting all my peas and carrots just yet. Nothing would make me holler and shout more than TDK landing the most coveted award of the year, but the odds are not 50/50 like Two-face's coin.

    "Almost never" are they key words. We still have some movies that are the highest grossing movies that DO win Best Picture... like 1976 Rocky, 1994 Forrest Gump, 1997 Titanic, and 2003 Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.... so it CAN happen.

    What hurts the most is that Dark Knight is based on a comic book. That may turn the voters off. Let's hope not. We'll see.

    Most popular doesnt always win (unless it is Return of the King). Star Wars perfect example and so was Goodfellas which was more popular than Dances with Wolves but we all know which won the most Oscars in 1990. Zimmer has always put out excellent music on great films (Gladiator) and some films you dont hear about at Oscar time (Tears of the Sun)

    The most popular movie almost never wins. It would be the obvious and safe choice. I hope they win because I feel in this decade both composers lost on years I think they should've won. Hans Zimmer should've easily won for Gladiator, and James Newton Howard should've won for The Village. Say what you want about the movie, but I think the score was brilliant. So I hope they win, maybe then I'd feel like justice prevailed. lol

    That's great news. Even if it's nominated Best Picture, I doubt it will win, as there were some blatant flaws in it. Minor, minuscule, but still there. In many ways, the score helped make the film. It is my personal favorite, but the eyes of the Academy differ much.

    And... The most popular film of the year hardly ever wins best picture, Chad. You really think that Annie Hall was more popular than Star Wars in 1977? Million Dollar Baby over Finding Neverland in 2004? The top grossing films of each year rarely gets nominated for anything more than technical achievements. However, if TDK does win, that will bring a smile to my face. First Super Hero Best Picture ever. History in the making for us fan boys.
