The Dark Knight Rises Wants Charlize Theron and Vera Farmiga

Charlize Theron may star in The Dark Knight Rises as Sarah Essen
Comic Book Movie is reporting an intriguing rumor that actresses Charlize Theron and Vera Farmiga may be up for roles in The Dark Knight Rises.

A source at an unnamed agency indicated that Charlize Theron has been approached to portray Detective Sarah Essen, who will be the new love interest for Gary Oldman's character, Jim Gordon. Vera Farmiga has auditioned for the role of Julie Madison , who will be Bruce Wayne's new love interest. Actress Kacie Thomas has also auditioned for the Julie Madison role. You can read descriptions of the characters as they appeared in the comic books below:

"Sarah Essen first appears in Batman #405, part of the Batman: Year One storyline. She is a detective partnered with then-lieutenant James Gordon. She and the married Gordon start a brief affair. She is murdered by the Joker and is hinted as the real Mother of Barbara Gordon (Batgirl).

Julie Madison was originally portrayed as an oft-imperiled socialite who is engaged to Bruce Wayne. She was not aware of his activities as Batman when, in her first appearance, she was used as a pawn in the vampiric Monk's battle with the Dark Knight. She has also been associated with the villain Clayface."

Julie Madison's ties to Clayface and her inclusion in the script have many speculating that Clayface may actually be one of the main bad guys in The Dark Knight Rises. Christopher Nolan has stated that there will be more than one villain, so its possible that Monk might even make an appearance.

We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on The Dark Knight Rises as soon as we have more information.

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Aidan Gillen, Marion Cotillard. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Interesting 'too out there'? So what is he going to do with the Superman Batman film?. You can't get any more out there than Superman. If he's going to start bringing in bizarre characters this will be the film to start bleeding them in. It won't go much longer without a bad guy who has the ability to do something odd. Just like the James Bond films won't go much further without some sort of dodgy gadget to save his arse.

Just as one might speculate that with the inclusion of Sarah Essen, The Joker might actually be one of the main vil- Oh, wait...

Also, why is it ALL of the female characters from the Burton/Schumacher films have a much bigger impact on and appeal to the fanboys? Must be something about those blondes...

So, basically... they could never use the character using that storyline cause all of the other characters have already been introduced and used to the fullest extent. What would be the point of adding her now?

@Josh I was actually referring to Holmes and Gylenhall. I just don't think they're that attractive. Never seen Farmiga before, but the picture in the related stories list above helps. She is kinda pretty, but she looks kind of old.

What? How is Vera Farmiga not "the hot one"? Both of these women are f*cking beautiful.

@B3njamin Agreed. Bruce deserves Charline, now that 2 (in my opinion) unatractive actresses have played his love interests.

@BTodd945 Also agreed. I could totally see her as Catwoman.

Also, not keen on the Clayface idea, but if anyone could do it, it's Nolan.

I'm not a big fan of Charlize. Don't know why. And Vera is good - but something about her The Departed annoyed the piss out of me....not keen on either of these choices.

Is it me, or would Charlize Theron make a sexy, violent, yet realistic Catwoman? Maybe I'm just letting my fantasy of seeing Theron in a black cat suit get ahead of me, but honestly is she not a good prospect?

I dont think Clayface is too out there...you can essentially portray him as a guy that is maybe severley burned and his skin is layered on his face poorly due to a bad surgery or due to someone that was not a doctor performing the operation so hes not caught by the authorities or even a guy who uses multiple prosthetic masks. There is definitely some options there. just because his name is clay face and we know him as thins monster looking thing doesnt mean that he in real life/Chris Nolans world would look like that. Its a play on words.

Nah, it won't be Clayface or the Monk. They're way too outta wack for Nolan's universe. The two female characters however just work well to continue the story in a non-superhero like way. Regular love interests for the realistic setting. For if Nolan went with Monk or Clayface then he's surely lost his head.

I personally would have rather seen Renee Montoya as the lead female rather than a love interest. I know a similar character was in TDK, but the writers could have made Montoya unique. There's not the possibility of a love interest there since she's a lesbian, and since she's on the police department, she could be a big part of the hunt for Batman, questioning Gordon and his allegiances on every move.

But that's not happening. I'm surprised they're going with a love interest, and since they're going with one, that it's such an unknown character. If they felt the need to go with a love interest for Bruce after Rachael's death, they might as well pulled out the big guns...Selina Kyle...Talia...there were a number of different options. Oh well. I trust Nolan.

On a similar note, we don't know what this is taking place. Maybe it's a couple years after the events of TDK. Batman has been in hiding, and digressed into this bogeyman. This would give Bruce more time to get past Racheal and make the new love interest more sensible. But, of course, it doesn't have to play out like this. It's an option, one that I think would be interesting.

In short, there's a number of different directions this movie could go in, and I can't wait for further news, especially plot wise.
