The Dark Knight Rises Runtime Confirmed at 164 Minutes

The Dark Knight Rises rides into theaters with a 164-minute runtime
Each of director Christopher Nolan's Batman movies have been longer and more epic in scope, with Batman Begins clocking in at 140 minutes, and The Dark Knight spanning 152 minutes. It should come as no surprise then that The Dark Knight Rises is the longest movie in the trilogy, with a confirmed runtime of 164 minutes and 27 seconds.

We reported back in April that this franchise finale was given a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America, although the runtime wasn't confirmed until now, by The British Board of Film Classification. We also reported in April that this new Gotham adventure starring Christian Bale will feature over one hour of footage shot in the IMAX format.

We also have the official synopsis, which reveals nothing new, but instead expands on what we already know.

"Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' The Dark Knight Rises is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.

But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane."

Christopher Nolan directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan. Now that we know the official runtime, only one more question remains: can The Dark Knight Rises break Marvel's The Avengers's opening weekend box office record? Check back in a few weeks to find out.

The Dark Knight Rises was released July 20th, 2012 and stars Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

I doubt it'll do those type of numbers again but it'll most differently get its money back that's for sure.

@artkid04 The reason why what happened to At World's End(Pirates 3) had happened, is because its script was rushed and was filmed back to back with Dead Man's Chest(Pirates 2). That didn't happen with The Dark Knight Rises, so there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

i'm excited as much as the next person about this but I remember the last third film in a franchise that was this long, At World's End, and it was an overlong jumbled mess. I still enjoyed it but I hope Batman can top that, am worried cause the way critics reacted to the new spiderman, I liked the movie and I understand what critics didn't like about it but I feel that critics are criticizing a lot harder now then they used to

So the Bane backbreak doesn't occur at the beginning of the film? Good. A lot of people were speculating that Batman's 8 year absence was due to an early altercation with Bane and a broken back. But from this synopsis it appears that Bane and Catwoman are what bring Batman out from self-imposed retirement. I like that much better. Save the pain for the end of the film.

@Joshua-Hollaway Yes, the longer it is...the better, because then we get to see more happen. I hate it when movies are really short, because then at the end of the movie, its seems like "That's all wee get to see?", if its a short movie.

  21. the Narrator

Also, this run time doesn't seem that long to me. Maybe it's because I recently watched all three LotR extended cuts back to back, on top of their special features that clocked in at around 4 hours per film, but whatever. As long as the pacing is up, the longer-the better for me.

That's funny, @ejk1. I do something similar for my 'event' films, but usually I get a hot dog, popcorn, and coke Icee. For normal flicks, I just sneak sh*t in.
