According to the DC Comics Universe, the Lazarus Pit is a "mythical vat of arcane chemicals first discovered by Ra's al Ghul as a cure for the dying son of a sultan he worked for. The Pit had a terrible side effect, however; it turned the Prince temporarily insane, leading to him killing the doctor's wife. After being blamed for the murder, the man who would become Ra's Al Ghul was buried in the desert. He was rescued by a tribe and a boy named Huew. After this, he used the Lazarus Pit to save himself, and vowed to avenge his wife. The doctor gave himself the title Ra's al Ghul - The Demon's Head."
It is not known how The Lazarus Pit will play into the plot of The Dark Knight Rises.
The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Aidan Gillen, Marion Cotillard. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

To go down with the ship, or not to go down with the ship, that is the question.

Another argument against this being the Lazarus Pit is the green screen. As much trouble as Nolan goes through to use practical special effects and stunts whenever possible, I doubt that he would go CGI for a small body of water, mystical or otherwise.

I doubt its the Lazarus Pit. Nolan has stated he don't want his Batman films being unrealistic so we're not going to get it. It might be something else.

Maybe this will be how Nolan introduces the supernatural side of Batman (villains such as Clayface and Man-Bat). A fountain of youth (the lazarus pit) may be supernatural, but most people are familiar with the myth.
I'll be glad either way though.

I hope this isn't the direction they're going with casting a young RAG. I just assumed they were using the character in flashbacks to set up Thalia's story (I know she's not confirmed as being in the movie, but many sites are speculating that "Miranda Tate" (Marion Cotillard) is actually an alias for Thalia).

I'm with @insertusernamehere on this one. We don't actually know what that is a picture of at the moment.

Insiders are doing a great job but leaking should be kept at minimum unlike that new Spider Man film who has been spoiled beyond recognition

Lazarus Pit? Did we suddenly get transported to Earth Two?

@aoshi well when it comes down to it Batman is a comic book story. Nolans world or not, its still a comic. anything can happen still

So a whole in the ground, green screen = lazarus pit...will wait till we actually hear from Nolan as usual
i thought this was an eye or something from the pic on the main page lol

@shuabert: I know nothing of this pit, but what you said makes a lot of sense.

@pjwolsker I hope he doesn't. He had a good death in Begins (for once the villain didn't scream like a p*ssy when confronted with his own death) and Nolan's Batman world is supposed to be based on reality. Bringing him back from the dead or him never actually dying would ruin it all.

Bane grows up in a Central-American prison in the comics, but maybe in Nolan's version he'll be made to work in a mine or something, like as a slave. Maybe this is part of Bane's backstory.

Wow, and this crappy photo merits an article?

The Lazarus Pits would make little sense to introduce now after Nolan went out of his way to not mention them in Begins.

The King of Thorns
It's not a lazarus pit. I'm betting my non-existent bottom dollar that this is nothing more than an intricate entrance like-set to be, as @funkster mentioned, or it may possibly be a burial site. Who knows? All I know is that it's uncommon of Nolan to use green screen like this, and yes, it is in fact green screen. Look at the blown up picture, and you can see its sheet material and not liquid.

@funkster i agree with you however that it doesnt seem like something nolan would incorporate into "his" trilogy. he has kept the batman mythos pretty close to the heart, but it still seems a bit out of place maybe would be more suited in schumachers version of batman, but not nolans.

i hate to gloat but if it is true, I feel pretty proud that i called this awhile back, along with that it may relate to bane, with his strength which is a side effect of the pit.
