An unidentified extra dies on The Dark Knight Rises set
An unidentified male extra died on the New York City set of The Dark Knight Rises last month after suffering a heart attack. The extra wandered off between rehearsal takes, and was later discovered unconscious. Warner Bros. confirmed the news with a brief statement, which you can read below.

"The studio can confirm that a male extra passed away while on a break during an off-set crowd rehearsal for a sequence with several hundred extras... in early November. Production fully cooperated with the authorities' investigation, which established that he died of natural causes."

The extra was reportedly rehearsing a scene where Bane (Tom Hardy) leads a group of escaped Arkham Asylum convicts in a huge melee scene with the Gotham Police. No principal cast members or filmmakers were present when the heart attack occurred.

This is the third death on a major studio production in the last few months. A stuntman died on the set of The Expendables 2 in October, and a G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation crew member passed away last month.

The Dark Knight Rises was released July 20th, 2012 and stars Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

folks die everyday on and off movie sets and a coffee break is a potential risk on any job (damn you, starbucks) i'm just stunned at the cold nature of the warner response. they quashed it for a full month then made sure folks knew they had no responsibility without expressing the tiniest bit of grief. i live with a fellow sag member who has been an extra in over 200 films and he too was outraged. he told me a little story. his father had a heart attack and died on the monorail at disneyland. he subsequently learned that disney struck a deal with the county whereby nobody can actully die at disneyland! the death certificate will list state and county but not disney. even if you fall off of space mountain and crush mickey on the way down. it's crappy image protection and should be called out. a cast member (with a name) died during the production of the batman movie and should be respectfully remembered especially after warner had taken a month to have their lawyers absolve them of any fault. "disclaimer as notification" is about a sh*tty as it gets. you would think a studio who lost an oscar winning actor from the franchise would be more sensitive. shame on warner!!!

joker was right... 'PEOPLE WILL DIE"...
They need to stop getting extras w/out checking their backgrounds 1st. nomatter how nice sum1 may be, theres always another side to their story, could b good, could b bad!
Just gotta ask ur self, is this the risk im willing to take.
And shame on them (the extras) for even considering doing this if they know they cant or shouldnt be. If an actor can die on set, so can an extra. or a stunt person. But who r we kidding? everybody will do this even if they breath thru a gas tank. this is a batman film,

an extra rehearsing a scene is just as much a cast member as say, heath ledger was in 'the dark knight.' oh, and the extra is also a human being. it's kind of a bad publicity move to undervalue contributions to a film especially where a life has been lost. cold legalese usually attends some degree of culpability. something is very stinky in gotham city...

nice to see warner brother's warm expression of sympathy for who-ever-the-f*ck, who was on a break, off the set, not with the stars, not under contract, probably an illegal and died of his own free will and hey... has anybody seen the tox screen? this comment was approved by the lawyers at team warner, perhaps? sad to announce? nope... forced to confirm. sad.

    That's sad.

But seriously? Why associate this with the Dark Knight? It had nothing to do with the production and he was only an extra. This is just bad press.

Very sad. But at least it wasn't the films fault this time. Nolan's films can't really sustain more bad publicity.

pretty soon we'll see "movie production" next to "alcohol" in a "Mayor causes of death" statistic.
