We reported last month that a six-minute prologue for The Dark Knight Rises will be attached to prints of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol. Christopher Nolan has now revealed that the prologue will actually be the first six minutes of the movie, which introduces audiences to Tom Hardy's Bane.

"The Prologue is basically the first six, seven minutes of the film. It's the introduction to Bane and a taste of the rest of the film. With Bane we are looking to give Batman a physical challenge that he hasn't had before. In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic."

The director also said that The Dark Knight Rises is set eight years after The Dark Knight.

"It's really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne's story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after 'The Dark Knight.' So he's an older Bruce Wayne; he's not in a great state. With Bane, we're looking to give Batman a challenge he hasn't had before. With our choice of villain and with our choice of story we're testing Batman both physically as well as mentally."

Costume designer Lindy Hemming also revealed what Bane's mask is really used for.

"He was injured early in his story. He's suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jaw line and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of whatever it is...the anesthetic."

Tom Hardy himself also commented on his Bane character, and the brutal physicality he displays.

"He's brutal. Brutal. He's a big dude who's incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It's not about fighting. It's about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it's nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action."

The Dark Knight Rises comes to theaters July 20th, 2012 and stars Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway, Gary Oldman, Aidan Gillen, Marion Cotillard. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

    @zender
That's probably what they will do with the cgi for Bane, and he probably wont look exactly like that on screen, like what we see of him in those photos above. I think he'll look stronger then that.

I think one big thing everyone is forgetting is that in Batman Begins his mansion gets burnt to the ground. In TDK batman was still rebuilding his batcave and mansion which is why he was using the facilities at Wayne Enterprises to store all of his gadgets. So if the batcave was still being rebuilt, why in the hell would he go back there? Why in the hell would he have his back broken at the batcave if it's being rebuilt and he has no reason to go there? Really? Think about it people. I think we should all stop trying to guess and wait for the damn movie.

this is wat i think...i think the first 6 mins of the film they are going to show batman running away from the cops picking up where they left off in TDK..he gets away he goes to his batcave and BANG...bane is there...they fight..he beats bane up but bane breaks his back and fleas away and gets away...and boom...8 years later....the story begins...

I'm sure Tom will do a good job but Bane has a lot more muscle than this guy. Just CGI it up a bit more.

I'm sure most (or all) of you dont really care about this but Banes physique really bothers me. I mean I know Rolan sticks to realism and yada yada but whats so unrealistic about a slightly taller and maybe a bit more muscular Bane? I just hate seeing Bats looking down on Bane as he fights him

Well, they didn't actually reveal anything other than what was already confirmed from the official trailer. The brawl between Batman vs Bane was revealed there.

The story is at least partly apparent. Bane is Invoking the people of Gotham to rise against the Batman, after revealing Harvey Dent for the monster he was, so the people will be opposed to the Authorities who hid this from people (Gordon specifically), thus siding with Bane to plunge Gotham back into Chaos and rip the place down. Batman is now very much the Frank Miller styled Batman, older, more regretful, seeing how he has contributed to the chaos by the very act of opposing it and causing it to change shape in the wake of his actions. This is how the story should be treated anyway. Then you have the possibility that (bear with me here) The Riddler, ie, the Accountant guy in TDR (referred to as Mr Rees (Mysteries?) has handed over the plans to Bane, thus accounting for the Tumblers, and for how Bane knows Batman's true name (which may or may not be the case, but if he is Genius Intellect, it shouldnt be too much of a stretch). I have to say, the appearance of Bane is fantastic, still very strong and true to the comics, but without going overboard like in that Schumacher joke, years ago. I'm REALLY looking forward to this

And now theres a nw rumor, thats since this is set 8 years after TDK that Ellen Page may appear in the film as Barbara Gordon

@ChiRep-1: Well, Bane is a member of the League of Shadows in the comics briefly. So presuming the flashbacks of young Ra's are from his perspective, then we could be getting a similar transformation of Bane to a League member like Bruce to Batman in "Batman Begins." Bane's anarchy in the city would be a perfect ploy to destroy Gotham which the League still wants to accomplish. With Batman out of the way, he suffers to watch Bane succeed, powerless to stop him, which would be the true ultimate revenge for Bane presuming he regarded Ra's like a father, as Bruce did. However, if the prologue does involve Bane breaking Batman's back on the same night as the "TDK" climax, then I don't see why Bane would go away for 8yrs before returning to Gotham. Granted Batman's morale is already low enough from the events of "TDK," so breaking his back would be the icing on the cake.

@slysnide All valid arguments, it seems likely they'll go the route of Bane breaking Batman's back in the prologue (which would be epic from a cinematic perspective). I wonder how the Rha's Al Ghoul/League of Assasin storyline will fit in since it's set 8 years later.

i was kind of figuring/ hoping that theyd make him sort of like frankenseins monster, very savage and brutal but extremely intelligent. i hope batman doesnt stop him simply but messing up his mask like in that peice of sh*t batman and robin. so they set this 8 yrs later, wonder if he's been batman the whole time or if he quit for awhile, from the sneak preview it seems like he disappeared for a bit and gave up.

early on when the pictures came out i noticed the scar/thing on his neck and have been wondering what it was. so the mask is for anesthesia, i'm also hoping it delivers the steroid like venom as well. I'm really digging this version of bane so far.

@chappy422: Yeah, we all noticed in unofficial set photos released a few months ago. Speculation has arisen of a chase between Bane in the tumbler, Batman in the batwing, and Catwoman on the batpod as all but the first have been seen in set photos & videos. They even had two tumblers (both camo) at the football stadium.

@TheFury: no, it'd be Warner Brothers' fault for wanting a shameless cash grab after Nolan expressed he didn't want to return to the series. Sure Jonah & Goyer came up with an idea, but Chris still was reluctant at first. Blame Hollywood. This will be a different film given where Bane & Catwoman are coming from. We already know they're not like the joker as we can reference the comics, and people shouldn't be comparing them as they're three completely different characters with three very different types of plots which would go along with them. By not trying to be bigger & better for the sake of being bigger & better let's us know the filmmakers care rather than just doing it for a shameless cash grab. Just wait and see.

  24. slysnide

Wonder where they are in the 3rd picture down.

@bawnian-dexeus: It'd have to be along those lines. Especially being 8yrs later, Dent's even less pertinent to Gotham.

@pjwolsker: I dunno. 8yrs is a long time for Bane to wait around before coming back with vengeance. As sensible as that prologue description sounded, and as badass as it would be, I'm doubting it now due to that 8yr time gap. If anything it'd benefit Bane to let Batman be chased down by the cops if he didn't intend to return to Gotham for 8yrs. I hope the prologue's at least better than Bane breaking out of some prison akin to his origins, as you couldn't grasp all that backstory in 6 minutes at the start of the movie. Maybe, but I doubt it. My fingers are still crossed for the back breaking prologue though.

@supermanvenom @Number1Wolverine: Two-Face wouldn't work as a returning villain. What would he be doing in that 8yr gap? How could he have survived that fall? How would he have escaped the police perimeter, or fake being dead? He after all sought revenge against the crooks who destroyed him, and he accomplished that with the exception of Gordon. He even said there was no escape from his predicament at the end of the film. Furthermore, the character was done well as he didn't become some psychotic bipolar personality when he was scarred. The character of Harvey Dent was preserved as Two-Face, but he was just angry and vengeful. With his revenge attained, it wouldn't make sense for him to join the very criminals he voraciously hated so much, to become one of them. Elseways I'd say Bane would have Two-Face in a chokehold rather than a picture of Dent.
