Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard officially join The Dark Knight Rises
Here is the official press release from Warner Bros.:
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard ("La Vie en Rose") and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises," the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend.
Marion Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.
The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster "Inception."
The director stated, "When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again."
Heading the cast of "The Dark Knight Rises," Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane.
Christopher Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
The Dark Knight Rises was released July 20th, 2012 and stars Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Liam Neeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Marion Cotillard, Morgan Freeman. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

@m2 We don't know that she's not playing a villain. All it says above is that she's helping Bruce Wayne get Wayne Enterprises on track. That could mean any number of things i.e. ulterior motives galore. Unless she is just the straight up love interest for him (but I highly doubt Nolan would go that boring route with such an interesting actress).

@dan1@ejk1: Yeah it sounds as if Strange is there a lot, but would really only require like, one or two scenes at Arkham, one on the task force, then a background plate on a TV interview, then the ending. I rationalize his killing of Tate as taking Batman's place wouldn't end the manhunt. Thus, killing the girlfriend or at least trusted ally of Gotham's most famous socialite would draw intensity from the task force, as well as from Bats himself. Thus, after the real guy is taken down, Strange would be attributed as a copycat. Of course they woudn't know it was him.

Sunjata, Klattenhoff, Gorman, and now JGL as a man of the law? I'm not liking too many cops in this film. I really wanted the mob to be a bigger part of this movie than they were in BB and TDK. As for Cotillard I'm glad she's not playing a villain. But I have trust in Nolan even if I don't like JGL as a cop.

@slysnide It's good, but adding Strange into the mix seems a bit much to me. Watch us all be wrong :P

@slysnide I really like the angle you give Dr. Strange in terms of what he deduced in Batman's reasoning for killing Dent. Not fond of the killing of Tate, but hey, someone's gotta die, right :)

Just looked at the cast list. Ten years ago, we wouldn't have thought this type of cast would ever grace the screen, in a Bat flick of all things... Damn.

Plausible theory @slysnide. I don't mind it, but I think with the title being TDKR, the ending would be a bit more victorious and bold. Also, I'm really weary of this supposed "vintage" villain Oldman talked about. However, I do like the whole "Bane ultimately breaks Hugo's back thinking him [to be] Batman". That's a neat little twist there, hinting at Knighfall. I don't know ,there's a lot of theories on this one. While all of you are interested in Tate's character, I am actually more invested in Levitt's role at the moment, because I'm wondering whether he'll help or hinder Bats, and how Nolan would bring in a new character in Gordons unit, and why would such a role require a near A-lister. Tate... well, I speculate on her character further, later.

@ejk1: @dan1: My Turn! :P
Being a year or just 6 months later (maybe less), Bruce is still having to supress the urge to be Batman at night, as such a time is the prime viewing time to catch Bats, and any low life in town would be willing to help the cops nail him, or vice versa in that any cop would let a low life get a pardon in exchange for assistance in catching Batman. Point being it's hard to BE Batman in this time, as the public would be demanding his arrest. Not to the point of angry mobs in the street, but you get the picture.
Enter John Blake and Sunjay's alleged Special Forces character. Blake is young, so maybe views unmasking Batman as a major promotion in his career, or at least better his prospects at heading a department someday. So he eagerly pursues that while Sanjay leads the night raids on known Batman 'haunts' as it were, utilizing his own theories and methods of capture. This of course would strain Gordon, whom is still commissioner, and was probably forgiven by the public for his past associations with Batman. Mayor Garcia probly tasks him with leading the task force, as no one knows Batman better than Gordon. Plus, the city demands answers, and having a friend of Batman get to the bottom of it all would be preferred by the Mayor, whom of course is aware of the sticky situation this puts Gordon in, but that's far more sticky given Gordon knows the truth.
To put minds at ease, he recruits a psyche to help in the case, thereby explaining why someone regarded as a good guy would suddenly turn to murder. Enter Professor Hugo Strange, Chief of Psychiatrics at Arkham whom has a few secrets of his own, such as his protoge's work (Scarecrow) being assisted by him. He can explain Bat's murder of Harvey as being competition, as Harvey was putting the mob outta business, rendering Batman uneeded soon (just as Bruce hoped in TDK). Thus, kill the competition and the few problem people, like Maroni whom was going down anyway, then you reattain your power. Thus, Batman only targets criminals as a code of conduct, and may have started out being Batman for the reason of fighting crime, but it's since evolved into a physiological neccessity. Afterall, it's easy to not get caught when your not dressing up as Batman. This is essentially true as expressed in the comics, Bruce needs Batman. Such explanations make sense to many, and if anything would annoy Bruce for how dead on Strange is, with the exception of being responsible for the murders.
Enter Bane, former criminal heavy deemed strategist and qualified to hunt Bats, as provided by Hugo Strange, as not every inmate in a criminal asylum is a raving lunatic. Just their views and angles are unappreciated, deemed crazy by society, thus making an asylum an easy cop out for crooks. Whether Bane was incarcerated there or knew Strange from the past would be up in the air. Either way, it's someone else for Batman to deal with.
Enter Selina Kyle, jewel thief and possible girlfriend of the billionaire playboy persona of Bruce. She's a catburglar possibly seeking to discover her roots, thus simply being motivation for Batman to go on the prowl, albeit for different reasons.
Enter Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprizes board member covering as a friend, trying to get as much access as to what Bruce Wayne does with all his money. Either placed there by Hugo Strange, Gordon, or is actually Talia Al Ghul there on her own merit. Thus possibly being responsible for Bane, whom would need an angle besides her dumb lackey with interesting strategies to avoid a "B&R" similarity. Or rather, there's a romantic angle between the two, and she isnt Talia at all. That part is truly up in the air.
At some point in the story, Hugo deems Batman the perfect pyscho, and deems himself fit to be Batman to satisfy his own ends. He kills Tate, probly right before she was to take out Bruce. He then is revealed to have manipulated other cops with his various serums to give Batman a harder time, Sanjay to be specific. Bane ultimately breaks Hugo's back thinking him Batman in one of Hugo's attacks at either Wayne Manor or some other unique location, possibly unintentionally saving Bats' life at the last moment. Bane departs Gotham depressed without Talia, and no real angle to take. Or is taken down by Cats & Bats whom begin a relationship at night as well. Hugo is unmasked as Batman, Arkham raided to expose his villainy, and Hugo incarcerated there, with the manhunt thus ending, and Bruce & Gordon's relationship continuing on the down low so as not to raise eyebrows. Thoughts?

The most loaded character description yet for TDKR. Brilliance, really, like you guys have said :)

@narrator@dan1 Everything now seems to be hinging on the "pivotal" character that Sunjata will play. Will it be Dr. Strange? Valley, like I had in my little story? Black Mask? Talia's bodyguard, assuming that Tate is Talia? A cop? It's anyone's guess right now.
@narrator Plenty of reviews to do this summer, dude. As far as Super 8, I'm sure everyone will be able to come up with different angles.

Lol, well you have a point @dan1. I have been slacking in that department for a near year now, but if you look at my last review (pre-Inception), it was District9, which came out a year before that equally loveable Nolan film. So this summer might be the best time. A prime candidate would be Super8 (my most anticipated flick this summer), but people will probably review the living hell out of that film, so idk. No promises though, on anything.
@ejk1, I honestly think that with several months having passed, we can allow Gordon to have hired Blake (as you mentioned) to head a hunt for the Caped Crusader. He can be obsessed with finding the Bats, and out of his research and cross referencing things, point to several interesting leads. Among them - Bruce Wayne. Enter Cotillards character. Either way, I agree that Tates character is really an interesting and unexpected move on Nolan's part, and for lack of a better term, she seems to be his Ace in the Hole (Cast wise). That is, if his female characters get better dialouge an direction.

@narrator Anything is possible. Right now, her character is the most interesting one. Is she Talia? Is she an undercover? And why did Gordon send an undercover into W.E. to begin with? I can't speak for the other characters, but Nolan struck gold with Miranda Tate. The ambiguity surrounding this character will only raise the intensity of fan interest.

@ejk1, anytime, man. And it'll probably be a while, friend. Maybe by tomorrow, if I have time. Lol. Btw, what do you think of the possibility of Tate being an undercover, as I said in my second to the last post?

@narrator Take your time, dude. Valley being introduced like that is sudden, I agree, but in trying to fit Knightfall in, you kind of have to do it. Once Bruce has his back broken, who else is going to continue, you know? Alfred? Doubtful lol. As far as Valley being able to take on the police force, I'm going to say yes because he was trained to be an assassin, so it stands to reason that he would be able to handle himself. Thanks for the input, and let me know when you make yours, as I imagine it will be a great read :)

Alright. @ejk1, I must say, that was a thoroughly entertaining and more than possible theory, and one I'd definitely be satisfied in. One major flaw would be the sudden introduction of Valley, coupled with the fact that he'd eventually dawn the Cape and Cowl soon. I'm not all too familiar with Valley, so I'm unaware if he'd be able to take on a police force like Bat's could, but the idea is interesting nonetheless. Plus, I really like what you did with Blake and Selina's storylines. Well done, and you'll have to give me time to come up with a worthy theory myself.

I'm almost done reading all of your folks' comments, but I just wanted to say this - while the "Tate is Talia" angle is a great and more than probable idea, what if Cotillards character was actually an undercover character working in Gordons unit, who somehow discovers Wayne's alter ego. It'd tie in fairly well, and it's not something we'd expect off the bat. Plus, she may be a mixture of a Strange and Fox type character, creating great possibilities for her character. Either way, I'm more than glad with the revealed characters. I'll finish reading now, and get back to you on my full theories, etc.
