The Dark Knight Breaks the $1 Billion Mark

The Dark Knight has finally reached the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. According to Variety, it is only the fourth film to ever reach this coveted milestone.

Warner Brothers announced the news on Friday, revealing that the combined domestic and international earnings for the film have gone beyond $1,001,082,160, thanks to the film's recent January 23rd re-release on IMAX screens. Sadly, though, its current stateside take of $533 million hasn't pushed Titanic out of the top spot just yet.

The film is currently up for 8 Academy Awards, the winners of which will be revealed tonight. Other films that have reached $1 billion include Titanic, The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of The King, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

The Dark Knight was released July 18th, 2008 and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Gabriela Curnen. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

I am happy. All of those movies, especially Return of The King, all deserved their moneys worth. Except the only reason Titanic did so well, is because of women, and their weakness for love stories. That and kick ass story/effects. :) But again, I'm happy.

Comrad... what are you talking about? If you take inflation in consideration, Titanic probably would have made 800 million instead of 600 million. A ticket costs more NOW then it did in 1998. I believe Titanic sold more tickets.

Don't get me wrong... I wish DK had sunk Titanic... but I'm not too sure your comment makes sense.

I wanted it to push out Titanic. It already has if you count for inflation. They should go by tickets sold.

What did they expect? Instead of re-releasing the movie AFTER ITS INITIAL BUZZ of course it wouldn't generate the same numbers. They should have maybe kept it in theaters longer. However the #2 spot is WAY good! And I'm sort-of happy with my Steelbook DVD! (Where's the REAL special features, WB???? Kcuf your Blu-rays, a-holes!)
