The Dark Knight Breaks Midnight Screening Record

Let the box-office record-breaking begin. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the highly-anticipated sequel The Dark Knight broke the midnight screening box office record, tallying an estimated $18.5 million from those sessions. The midnight shows bowed in 3,040 theaters.

The film broke the previous record held by 2005's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, which took in $16.9 million from 2,915 theaters.

"We're very proud of the film," said Dan Fellman, Warner's head of distribution. "It's the magic of the movie business, how one film just stands out above the others."

That $18.5 million record-breaking tally also does not include grosses from 3 AM and 6 AM screenings that were added in many venues to meet the whopping demand.

The Dark Knight was released July 18th, 2008 and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Gabriela Curnen. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

Dark Knight has made 66.4 million on Friday ALONE. Saturday and Sunday still left. My 164 million prediction for the weekend looks promising. My friends can check out my predictions for the weekend in my profile... I think Visionary already checked it out.

WOAH, topping Episode III is quite a feat. You know what sucks, the hype in Portugal is almost unexistant. :| People were far more excited here with the latest Indy movie. Bleh.

I have to say, with all my anticipation of this film, I was more than satisfied watching it. It was more than a comic book movie, it was poetic. It blended all its elements perfectly. The villains were all divided with their own psychological baggage. The Joker was more than I could have imagined the way he was portrayed. I would say, rather groundbreaking in the way Christopher Nolan told this story from the literature of the comics. No other translation of a graphic book has ever been this tragic or realistic.

Anyway, I expected for this to top the box-office records and eclipse the comic book movies of the summer. But those who watch this have to have the mind to absorb what is actually going on to appreciate what is set on the screen.
