The Bourne Supremacy nets $53.5 million on top of the Box Office charts

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Bourne Supremacy, starring Matt Damon, confidently took the reins in the top spot with a stronger-than-expected debut of an estimated $53.5 million. The weekend's other new arrival, Warner Bros. Pictures' Catwoman, starring Halle Berry, was purring in the third spot with a moderate but disappointing estimate of $17.2 million.

Lions Gate/IFC Films' Fahrenheit 9/11 also notched another milestone. On Saturday, as part of its fifth weekend of release, Michael Moore's film, already the highest-grossing documentary of all time, crossed the $100 million mark, a first for a nonfiction film. Dropping into the seventh slot with an estimated $5 million, the film was down a respectable 30% from a week earlier.

The debut of "Supremacy" was nearly double the $27.1 million first weekend of The Bourne Identity, which went on to gross $121.7 million by the end of its domestic run. The opening for the PG-13-rated action thriller marks the fourth-largest this summer, Universal's best opening in 2004 and notches a career-high for Damon.
