The Bourne Legacy Offers Lead to Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner offered the lead role in The Bourne Legacy
Universal Pictures has found their new spy for The Bourne Legacy, with the studio offering this role to Jeremy Renner. It is believed that Jeremy Renner will accept the offer, which will put Universal on track to start shooting in September. We reported earlier this month that Jeremy Renner was offered the part, although it seems that a formal offer just went out today.

Earlier today, we reported that Animal Kingdom star Joel Edgerton was being considered for the lead in The Bourne Legacy, an agent in the secretive Treadstone program. That story also indicated Universal wants Joel Edgerton to play the Huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman. Just last week, we reported that Hugh Jackman turned down the Huntsman role, so it seems Joel Edgerton may now be the favorite for that part.

The studio decided on Jeremy Renner after two rounds of testing for the role over the past eight weeks.

Tony Gilroy will direct The Bourne Legacy from his own screenplay. Tony Gilroy wrote the first three movies centering on Jason Bourne (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum), although The Bourne Legacy will focus on a completely different character while setting it in the same world as the previous Bourne movies.

The Bourne Legacy comes to theaters August 3rd, 2012 and stars Rachel Weisz, Jeremy Renner, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Oscar Isaac, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn. The film is directed by Tony Gilroy.

He is not playing Bourne it's kinda like a spin off, he is not taking over for Matt Damon, and he will be great

From S.W.A.T to The Hurt Locker To Mission Impossible 4 To The Avengers, Jermeny Renner is a great actor and I think he will be great as Hawkeye but as Bourne, he may pull it off.

Jeremy Renner has been acting for a long time. It's time he got some major roles like this. Remember National Lampoon's Senior Trip.

At least its not a reboot! Its just like a spin off of the franchise set on another character somehow related to the Treadstone project

At least now I know I won't have to repurchase the Bourne series when this becomes bundled with the first 3 films.

@dan1 My unit worked close with the marines and its definatly a case of "my brach is better than yours" but damnit if i dont have respect for those boys. Hell i have respect for anyone who serves in any branch but the Marines and the Rangers are the most boastful.

  12. Dan

@skywise It could have been a simple case of "my branch of the military is more hardcore then your's". I know plenty of ex-military who suffer this delusion lol. They're all hardcore in their own ways. Just because they're not the literal ones busting the doors down and wiping out the enemy face to face on a daily grind doesn't make what they do less honorable. But eh :P

@dan1 oh no doubt about it, hollywood had to put their spin on it but there are scenes like the one where they are trying to disarm the car bomb in the public square with people watching them with binos and radios and cell phones. That is SCARY. Some of those scenes were very accurate but the drama side was the hokey hollywood BS.

@skywise My mind *was* blown with Hurt Locker, until I had a conversation with a marine coworker of mine. He said those guys were lazy, and take their sweet time getting to IED's. But maybe he wasn't the best judge of character, being a grunt in the Marines. But that was his take. He hated the movie, too :P said it was Hollywood drivel.

@brian My mind was blown in The Hurt Locker but mainly because of the realism and the attitudes of those guys. I worked with bomb squads (not in that capacity) but i know what its like to go thru that type of stress. Everything was dead on in that film except that silly Hollywood BS where he leaves the base at night....trust me, he would have never been seen again.

Hahah. Yeah @skywise, good points. I'm all for him stepping up and kicking ass... I don't see why there's so much hype around the dude right this second. He's done some great stuff so far....he's just yet to blow my mind. But trust me, I want him to!

@brian I think that he will either prove himself to have massive staying power or disapear within a few years. I hope he sticks around because he has that everyman quality about him that allows audiences to connect to his characters. That is something i always appreciate in an actor who takes on actin roles.

Remember Bruce Willis in Die Hard 1 (and please dont pound me for comparing the two) before he became the silent, scowling, stoic type...he was just an ordinary (detective) guy trying to survive. I think that is why the first is still the gretest. Audiences were able to connect to his suffering....he wasnt rambo is what i am saying.

hell i am just rambling now.

Am I the only who remembers that he's supposed to be picking up the mantle on the Mission Impossible franchise? lol odd right? like he will be the new main character after this latest Mission Impossible this december, then he will appear in this and ahhhh, it's just too weird

look, I have absolutely nothing against the actor, infact he might be the best choice. But I can't watch a Bourne movie without Damon, just can't. It's like replacing captain jack sparrow or frickin gandalf for that matter.

  28. gandoff2169

He has a good look for a "spin off" movie. But I dont like them making a movie, that is a contiuation with out Jason Bourne. Thats to me is like making James Bond, with out James Bond. And this franchise to me, was the american James Bond movies with a twist on his beginings.
