Writer-director Tony Gilroy has met with several actors in his searching for the new lead character in Universal's The Bourne Legacy, which will be a new assassin with a similar background to Jason Bourne, played by Matt Damon.

Variety is reporting that Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Kellan Lutz met with the writer-director.

Univeral and Tony Gilroy are looking at actors in their mid-20s to early 30s.

Tony Gilroy wants to screen-test all candidates, which may be a stumbling block for some established thespians.

Production on The Bourne Legacy was to begin in the spring, assuming they find their leading man.

The focus on a new character will allow some flexibility for the possibility of Matt Damon returning in some fashion.

The Bourne Legacy was released August 10th, 2012 and stars Jeremy Renner, Scott Glenn, Stacy Keach, Edward Norton, Donna Murphy, Michael Chernus, Corey Stoll, Alice Gainer. The film is directed by Tony Gilroy.

No one f*cking reads the article. No one is replacing Damon's character. This is a different story set in the Bourne Universe, with the main protagonist (according to whats been released) being our eyes and ears to the ramifications of Bourne's actions. It'll leave the door open for Bourne to come back. Read the f*cking thing, people.

I'd pick Garrett Hedlund...Jake Gyenhall and Tobey Macguire have already made names for themselves in Hollwood. It's Garrett's turn now. TRON Legacy I wouldn't say put him on the map, but it definitely let him get noticed.

  5. Tha Phoenix

I would only ever be interested in another Bourne film if Matt Damon (by some miracle) decided to star as the eponymous character. OR if they got Chris Pine (like @dan1 suggested).

    Otherwise.... NEXT.

@thedarkknight23 i second that, but even if matt was in i probably still wouldn't want it to be made. I don't necessarily have a problem with 4 bournes, but the problem that now-a-days everyone thinks that if theres 4 bournes there has to be 6 bournes, i don't understand that.

@mattbierwagen yea I know what you mean. Matt's out and this shouldnt even be made

i personally wouldn't want to see any of them in this. How about matt damon, thats a good choice.

@thedarkknight23 because all three of them probably want to be the main character

Id go ahead and get rid of maguire though, hes got back problems, he can't handle a bourne film.

I think if anything bring Gerrett Hedlund would be the best choice.
But why not bring in all three of them to play characters

Well according to the very same slashfilm.com article, the casting list of people they are looking at includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch and Kellan Lutz.

It goes on to say that Deadline is reporting a much longer list though, which includes those names as well as Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, and Benjamin Walker

In all honesty, if someone is going to "take over", so to speak, as a new agent, I would like to see Joel Edgerton in that role. I think that guy is great and really hasn't had the opportunity to shine, yet. He's always given roles that are smaller. I think he's got the look for the part as well.

I think some of those name, like Paul Dano, would be for other roles because we all know he does NOT fit the profile of a badass assassin. I could see him in the Offices trying to track the guy down.

Either way, I just hope that Tobey Maguire does NOT have a part in this. He is absolutely terrible in everything he does.

TOBEY MCGUIRE!!!! I'd love to see him as a bad ass..

It's not a remake, and they're not replacing Damon. They're telling a new story set in the same world.

Pretty good short list they got, and I am fine with this moving ahead as long as it's a new spy.

Bourne is Matt Damon. With out him, it wont be the same at all. You can put a pretty coat of paint on a ruster old car, but it would still be a rusty old car. Putting good actors in this, with same actors from the original Bourne films, and with many key ideas included, but dosnt mean it will be as good as what Damon could do. This could be compared to the old LOTR's cartoonish movie made in the 60's/70's compared to the live action did by Jackson. Damons would be the better version, and the other would be a water downed, poorly wrote side story for more money. Why do it, if your main star wants to do another????

i f*cking hate that they are doing this without Matt Damon but its happening so we cant do anything about it. i dont want to see Jake Gyllenhaal in this but i do like the idea of Toby in it since he hasnt been in anything huge since Spiderman. Garrett wouldnt be bad either

  21. Josh

I would be fine with any of these actors, but I would prefer Hedlund. I'm pretty impartial to this movie, but I've enjoyed the trilogy, and I like Tony Gilroy a lot, so I will probably check it out, but it's not high on my list.

This is just going to fail.. Damon made this film what it is, to change it up and make it like Bond is just terrible.

@dan1, of course, your opinion is educated and valued. And Gilroy did great behind the camera with Michael Clayton and pretty well with Duplicity. I just think this is the lesser of evils, and it might even be good. Lol.

@rexspinas While your ideas could possibly work (assuming Gilroy is as good a director as he is a writer, and assuming they pick someone believable), I'm still in the camp of letting Ultimatum be the finisher and what happened after that left up to my interpretation. The studios obviously feel differently and will proceed one way or another, and as I said, maybe with some convincing, I'll come on board.

But, this is all just my opinion.

    3 years agoby @dan1Flag

  26. The King of Thorns

I don't. The studio needs money, and they're gonna milk this amazing franchise to death any way they can. At least this way, we get the writer of the Bourne films on-board, we get to flesh out the consequences of Bourne's actions, and the ending has been hinted to being left open for Bourne to step in. Maybe even a Damon cameo. Of all the bad scenarios, this is the best, for sure.

What they need to do is get Edgar Ramirez back from the last film, and show the repercussions of his characters actions as well, and tie everything from the past films to the lead in this film. This would make for a fantastic "who-dun-it" film, and again, it only honors what we've seen from the past Bourne films.

Greengrass and Damon aren't up to it right now, but maybe after this film, they will be. The name isn't "slapped" on either, it assures the Audience that this takes place within the Bourne universe. It's not rocket science.
