The Bourne Legacy Leaves Matt Damon Unhappy

The Bourne Legacy leaves Matt Damon unhappy
It was announced in early October that Tony Gilroy, writer of the first three Bourne movies, was set to write and direct a fourth chapter in the franchise titled The Bourne Legacy. Shortly thereafter, it was revealed that Matt Damon wouldn't be returning in this latest sequel to reprise his Jason Bourne character. Instead, a new character would be introduced, which would allow for Damon and director of the first three installments Paul Greengrass to return for a future sequel.

Universal has made it clear that they want Jason Bourne to carry on long into the future with or without Matt Damon, thus creating a solid franchise that can continue on throughout the decades with any actor playing the character ala James Bond. Matt Damon recently caught up with MTV, and he revealed that he is not at all happy about Universal's plans for future Bourne installments:

"I have no idea what (Tony Gilroy) has planned. But he's a very smart guy, so I'm sure it's going to be good. I do know that whatever he's doing won't preclude Paul Greengrass and I from coming back and doing ours. What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn't like James Bond. You can't send him on a mission. There's character development, there's an arc that the character has traveled through the three movies. You don't just start over at the beginning of every movie. I think what they're looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually. I love the character. I love the stories. But only if Paul Greengrass says he will direct again. So far, though, he's decided not to. I'd definitely say yes if he went for it. I know he would have a great story, and it would protect the legacy of what we created."

The Bourne Legacy comes to theaters August 3rd, 2012 and stars Rachel Weisz, Jeremy Renner, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, Oscar Isaac, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach, Scott Glenn. The film is directed by Tony Gilroy.

The new man would have to be better than even brilliant to take the sudience along as matt damon did. The jason bourne is made for matt and no oneelse can take his place. If they are thinking to make it like james bond, huh, then i think i better start looking for some other action sequel. Matt, can you just walk in for us here. Do something man, get in there!!! We love you man!!!

the whole 'bond' thing they're trying to do is stupid. it wont work. besides, we ALREADY have bond, not to mention the mission impossible series, so trying to create ANOTHER bond is just stupid. it doesn't work for the character anyway, as damon stated. jason bourne DOESN'T WANT to be a spy, thats kinda the whole point of his character. he's trying to pull away from all that, not do it for longer.
i dont like this idea at all.

Just do one more trilogy with Matt, create another character and focus on him instead of Bourne. Well it makes sense.

Regarding Batman, anyone can look like Bruce as long the actor can make us think he's Batman.
Bond is the same way, as long the actor is convincing enough I'll be happy.

Matt Damon is Jason Bourne. It'll be just weird seeing another actor play him. Just like how Christian Bale is Batman.

@Gnynah: That's exactly how I feel about these type of movies. You don't stick with the same actor then I won't watch the movie it's stupid to stick with an actor for a certain amount of films then replace them or whatever it just seems weird to me.

Totally agree with @Julian Left on this one Matt owns the character its that simple, its like how Kate beckensale owns Selen, Chris Reeve owns Superman and so on, someone else can come along and try but never achieve what the original actors did,

Let me clarify, I don't think they should replace Matt Damon, AT ALL. I was just saying that I wouldn't mind seeing another character be put in, there is nothing wrong with that.

As for 24, I agree with what K.S. has said for years now, that 24 can live on with out Jack Bauer, does that mean I want him to be replaced, no. I simply wouldn't mind, if written strongly, to have someone else take over, another character if you will.

  24. Big Mike

this is what i think they should do; in the beginning of the film have the FBI desperately searching for Jason Bourne, in the middle they finally get a lead that seems incredibly stupid to take, but they take it anyway. They're lead to a house, the front door is broken in, they walk upstairs and they see Jason bourne beating someone up. The point is to barely show him in the movie.

The only way Bourne can become the American Bond,,, is if they simply finish the story to come full circle with the main characters. That would be the only way this franchise could be open for any change in the story for a Bondsih extention of Bourne. But, the story is actualy over. The three films, are the actual ending of the "who" am I, and "whats" going on around me. The so called fourth book, which I dont own and have not read, but I do have and have read the three original books, is a extention of the three, trying to carry on what has gone on before it. If I am correct, the fourth book is actualy wrote by someone eles too... But anyway, Bourne with how the third ended could conitue as a American Bond. But you have to use Damon for more then one reason. One is, you have to keep a connectionn with the origian three films, to transistion to a new and longer direction of Bourne. Two, He is Bourne. Just as Connery is still "THE" Bond. No reason to change Bourne now when he wants to do the part, the fans want him in the part, and there is no real option out there to replace him. And three, a change of story and main actor, and main character, at this time, could kill this franchise on the want to make money and make a new Bond for their movie company. You force it, and you can make a crappy story, and turn fans off completly. Look at Bowe on his video game movies he made. He sucks so bad at these films, still gets them, and no one wants to see them. So when he screws up a video game movie, it kills it. Some could have been fantastic, if done right. So take a step back, before you make a mistake you can not fix......

Defiantly agree with Matt on this. All Universal wants to do is to jump in here and f*ck everything up by milking the franchise until its bone dry just for they came make some money. What happened to the days when the studio actually cared about its movies not just about the money they make? O wait I forgot, this is Hollywood such thing has never excised. To that I say f*ck you universal, f*ck you!

They are letting this franchise go to sh*t! What idiots! That's just like saying "Hey! Let's come out with a new James Bond movie but guess what?" "What?" "James Bond actually isn't gonna be in it we are gonna stick some random person in it and it'll be just as cool!"
