@ejk1 LMAO!! Like in Casino when he stabs that guy who was talking sh*t to De Niro with a pen? "You hear a little girl, Ace? You hear a little girl?"

@thedude-abides If I see Pesci in my store again, I might tell him to tell DeNiro to step up his game. I just hope Pesci doesn't respond with a baseball bat to my knees :P

@ejk1 Oh, believe me, I know your personal feelings regarding De Niro. I've been witness to many of your thoughts pertaining to this issue, and I wholeheartedly agree. But, I would even take it a step further. I would even go so far as to say he stopped caring after Cape Fear.
I saw an interview with Quentin Tarantino on Charlie Rose after he made either Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction, I can't remember. During the interview, he called out De Niro for taking roles just for the money because of some sort of business venture he was doing. (again, I can't quite remember what exactly).
Tarantino scrutinized him for making movies like Backdraft, among others, in which he said even the most die hard De Niro fans, such as himself, had literally zero interest in seeing. He then went on to commend Harvey Keitel for doing films like Bad Lieutenant, Res Dogs, and Pulp, even though he was essentially at the same point in his career age wise as De Niro.
Immediately after that, we saw the uptick in De Niro's work with films like Heat, Casino, Jackie Brown, and Ronin, which you mentioned. After that, as you eluded to, it all went to sh*t. Maybe you need to get in his ear like Tarantino did and maybe we'll see another upswing in his work, lol.

@narrator The Good Shepherd also starred Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie. They did a lot of the heavy lifting for him. He used to carry films, like Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Cape Fear, etc. His performances have gone from extraordinary to pedestrian.

The Narrator: The Better Man
One good film DeNiro's done was The Good Shepherd. Though, that's the only one that comes to mind, which further supports your folks theories..

@thedude-abides That's because DeNiro stopped caring after Ronin. He made Analyze This, and realized that he could get away with being a caricature. I have mentioned this many times on MW, but I'll say it again: DeNiro can no longer carry a movie. Where Jack and Clint have continued to be nominated for performances and, in Eastwood's case, directing, and Pacino has found new life in Shakespearean roles, especially as Shylock, DeNiro has simply regressed. Where, oh where, has my Raging Bull gone? :(

De Niro's choice of roles since the late 90s has been sickening. This will prove to be no exception.

an amazing cast with a flat premise. Not sure what to think of this one.
