The Avengers may fight Loki as the main villain
Thor's adopted brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), will reportedly be the main villain in The Avengers. It seems that Loki will team up with The Skrulls to square off against The Avengers. We reported in December that The Skrulls and Kree would do battle with the superhero alliance, although this is the first we're hearing about Loki as the main villain.
Loki will apparently use the "cosmic cube" from Captain America: The First Avenger to summon The Skrulls to Earth. None of this has been confirmed at this time.
Joss Whedon will direct The Avengers, which will start production in April.
Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Now theres a rumor that Clark Gregg tweeted hinting that Agent Coulson could be a Skrull as well and could be the way they introduce them into the Avengers
Could be plausable, imagine the man whos been in the center of both Iron Man films, whos gonna have a bigger role in Thor, could be an undercover Skrull who infiltrated SHIELD and is passing along info to the Skrull Empire

Actually, I've been under the impression that Loki is the rumored main villain, and didn't hear anything about any Skrulls.

I remember a picture of a Gauntlet prop being shown for the movie Thor at a convention. Sh*t, if a few references of a greater force at hand is shown in either Cap or Thor or even both leading up to the Avengers... I would be more than happy to see Thanos as the main villain, if not the first, at least the second film.

I prefer the Maestro Hulk storyline. As we witnessed in The Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner seems to be able to change at will. I would like to see an intelligent Hulk under the control of Loki, who has infinite strength but also Loki's intelligence. That would be a Ultimate foe for the Avengers squad without exhausting the number of characters and villains.

That Loki look doesn't ok for me. It's kinda stupid.

I'm still very impressed that they plan on pulling off the completion of a movie of this magnitude in 13 months.
I wouldn't be surprised if they have been secretly filming parts of The Avengers in the process of filming Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America. It seems logical since 13 months is pretty far-fetched when it comes to finishing The Avengers.
Either that, or the release date will be pushed back to the holidays of 2012.

"This is the first we're hearing of Loki as the main villain"
Really? I thought we heard that months ago. I have been under the impression this whole time that Loki was going to take control of the Hulk. I think that would be a much better plan than introducing the Skrulls this early and with this many characters already.

@SonOfOne41 No there aren't. For one Loki is awesome. For two, name ten. Thanos and Ultron, certainly, but who else is an enemy of the primary Avengers that is able to cause problems eternal? Kang? In my opinion, that's a toss up. Onslaught? You need both the X-Men and the FF for that to be sensical. Plus, remember that Loki is NOT a fighter. He manipulates others into doing the work for him, and then laughs. The God of Mischief, not war, remember? He's directing traffic towards the Avengers, with no intention of fighting until he has the upperhand decidedly, or he has no choice but to do so.

@ejk1...Thanos is a give in to be the ultimate vilian The Avengers will have to face, but yeah i agree having the Skrulls in the first movie is jumpin the gun a bit, have Loki manipulating the hulk or building up the formation of the Masters of Evil, they already said Arnim Zola will make an appearance...
have them fight a team of supervillains to match them and save the Skrull invasion for the sequels

Not shocked about Loki's involvement--he was always a given. Somewhat annoyed about the involvement of the Skrulls, simply because I believe that for their first team up, The Avengers should not be tasked with something so big. An Invasion style story could have waited until movie two or three, while Hydra/Loki/Hulk were the antagonists. I also don't like the whole "fight Loki" phrase--Loki doesn't fight. He manipulates others. As far as this surprise villain is concerned, well, if it's being kept top secret, there is only one reason for it--the villain is big time. When I add everything up--Cube, Gauntlet, etc.--Thanos comes to mind. Any lesser surprise would disappoint.
