Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios' highly anticipated movie Marvel's The Avengers, directed by Joss Whedon (Serenity) from a screenplay by Whedon. The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as Thor, Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (Thor, The Hurt Locker) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are All Right) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (Iron Man, Thor) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) as Nick Fury. Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, "Marvel's The Avengers" is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel's The Avengers is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, Marvel's The Avengers brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (Wallander) and Stellan Skarsgård (Angels & Demons, Mamma Mia!) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios' feature Thor.

Marvel's The Avengers is being produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D'Esposito, Patty Whitcher, and Jon Favreau. Marvel Studios' Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso will co-produce.

The creative production team also includes Oscar nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey (Atonement), production designer James Chinlund (The 25th Hour), Oscar winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs (Iron Man 2, The Matrix), visual effects producer Susan Pickett (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell (Superman Returns), and four-time Oscar nominated special effects supervisor Dan Sudick (Iron Man, War of the Worlds). The editors include Oscar nominated Paul Rubell (Collateral) and Jeffrey Ford (Crazy Heart).

Marvel Studios most recently produced Iron Man 2 which was released in theatres on May 7, 2010. The sequel to Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the number one spot its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million. To date the film has earned over $620 million in worldwide box office receipts.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. Iron Man, in which Robert Downey Jr. originally dons the super hero's powerful armor alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008 and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million its opening weekend and grossed over $571 million worldwide. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released The Incredible Hulk marking its second number one opener of that summer. The spectacular revival of the iconic green goliath grossed over $250 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

That's not The Avengers' logo. It's SHIELD's logo.

At this point is anyone under the illusion that Loki WON'T be in the Avengers? I thought it was a given pretty much from the start.

@bane5000 ya he is really good at giving each character their moment to shine. I had never heard of Firefly until i watched the extras on Serenity but i loved that there were so many characters and that they all felt fleshed out in the short runtime of that movie. Joss is a geeks geek so i have the faith brother.

@bawnian-dexeus,,,True, maybe thats why he went to recruit Gen. Ross seeing as how hes one to have extensive info about the Hulk so Tony can know what to do with the suit and what he needs to neutrilize Hulk if needed. I wonder how come Gen. Ross wont be in the Avengers though, he could be as useful military wise as Dr. Selvig willl be to SHIELD in the film

@skywise...i like Whedon for the fact that he can handle writing for an ensemble cast and balance it out well between the characters [ Firefly, Buffy, Angel, etc ] and keep it fun to watch and not laggy and boring. Ive watched Angel from beginning to end sometime ago, and i liked how the continuity from episode to episode fit together all the way till the end and didint break much from the storyline that was going on at the moment, lets hope we get that kind of really smoothed out and glued together continuity with The Avengers as well as any other films they release in the future

@bane5000 or maybe after The Incredible Hulk end credits, he may have started working on its development. Would be great to see.

@bawnian-dexeus...Lets hope we get to see the Hulk Buster suit, if the post credit scene to Thor is any indiciation of how the Hulk may be controlled to be the baddie for a bit in The Avengers, Tony May have to break out the Hulk Buster to stop him

@bane5000 I love Whedon but as far as living up to expectations...you know what they (the famous "they") You can please some of the people some of the time...you know the rest.

I would really have liked to see Joss's take on the X Men. He really gets those characters. Astonishing x men are some of the most interesting stories of everyones favorite band of misfit mutants.

However, i will settle for his take on Avengers.

@skywise...True, i enjoy secrecy and surprises in films { thats why i regret watching and spoiling the post credits scene of Thor for myself already }, but so far Marvel as done moderately well at keeping certain aspects of their films under wraps, heres to hoping for some awesome suprises with Cap as well as The Avengers when its gets released and see if it comes close to our expectations :]

I cant wait until Marvel entertainment retains all the rights to their characters...esp[ecially the X Men. An X-Men movie from Marvel entertainmentr would blow my lil brain against the wall. Maybe one day that will happen. Until then i will have to deal with Fox's take on the Mutant universe. And now it seems they are having 2 X men timelines....the 60's and the modern day x men. That is interesting to me but we all know that Fox is...well i dont even know what to say.

@bane5000 hehe thats funny but who can blame them. While i am not a big fan of Feige i understand the fact that he wants certain things to be kept in the dark. I'm guessing that there will be a team of baddies that rival the Avengers.

But in this day and age...the info WILL get out. It walwasy does. Not like the old days where everything was shrouded in secrecy.

@jptheredskull I know, but it doesn't connect with other Marvel movies like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, and The Avengers all do how they tie-in together. That's all I'm saying so i don't count it as part of the MCU canon.

Heres an interview HitFlix conducted had done with Tom Hiddleston bout Loki appearing in The Avengers...but check out how Kevin Feige butts in towards the end...

HitFlix: "So we had a chance to tour the weapons vault in Odin's chambers, and I couldn't help but wonder... if someone were to steal some of those weapons and head to Earth with them, that would take more than one hero to stop them, wouldn't it? Don't you think that might demand... oh, let's say... The Avengers?"

Hiddleston [smiling] : "Well, actually, that's not far off. What I've heard so far makes it sound like I'll have a great time in 'The Aven'--" and that's as far as he got before Kevin Feige leaned in close, and power-whispering something in Hiddleston's ear. The smile vanished and a suddenly-shaken Hiddleston continued. "You know, perhaps I'm not in 'The Avengers' after all."

...i bet Feige whispered in his ear " Say anything further and I'll Norton you " LOL

@skywise I'm looking forward to seeing it also :) just I still think it was re-booted too early. I mean come on, it's not a franchise thats like 25yrs old. But the hip, cool, young Spidey will appeal to the 'new' Gen. of Spider-Man fans. After seeing Andrew Garfield's performance from The Social Network, I have faith he'll do great! The one thing I like about this, is the new cast :)

@ghostman I know....but i am crossing my fingers. Altho i am not too happy with a reboot i still love the character and so i will of course be seeing it regardless of what the critics have to say.

Well, except the user critics on this web site. I know the users that i tend to agree with and those i dont soooooooo....thats what i will be looking for.

@jptheredskull i think the 'Original boner Maker' would be Farrah Fawcet's poster that's a classic one rite there ;) @bawnian-dexeus well if those two dont get ur blood pumping, then what does&#191 lol! @skywise u do kno that The Amazing Spider-Man is not part of MARVELs MCU, but a Sony pictures film. Not produced by Marvel Studios...
