The Avengers Hulk Looks Like Me But Bloated and Green Says Mark Ruffalo

Mark Ruffalo begins work on The Avengers today, Friday April 29th, the same day his directorial debut Sympathy for Delicious opens in theaters. While promoting that drama, he opened up a little bit more about playing both Bruce Banner and Hulk.

When asked if he was, in fact, playing both parts, the actor confirmed that yes, he will be playing both Banner and Hulk. He also went onto describe what Hulk will look like when he appears on screen next summer.

"He looks just like me, but bloated and green. And big! He looks like me 40 pounds ago. [Laughs] I'm the first actor to do both. It's really cool. I was surprised by how well my theater training played into the motion capture thing, because it's all your imagination. When he moves across the ground, I want him using all fours, using his arms as much as his legs to move from here to there. I'd like to capture some of the primitive aspect of him. I've been working with [director/co-writer] Joss Whedon quite a bit on developing it, my portion of it. I'll be working with Robert Downey Jr., and I'm already doing the motion capture stuff. I'm excited."

When asked if he was bulking up to play Hulk, Mark Ruffalo said quite the contrary.

"The more of a difference there is between Mark and the Hulk, the happier everyone seems to be. I was like, 'So do you want me to get ripped up?' And they went, 'No, no, no, no, no, no! Nice and trim. We want you nice and trim.' They said, 'We want you to look good with your shirt off, but we don't want you strapped.' I can live with that. And so can my wife!"

The Avengers is now shooting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Can't wait. I'm glad they're not having Ruffalo get really muscular, because Banner is supposed to be a normal, nerdish guy, not a superman.

Just leep the Hulk design from TIH, it was fine the way it is, they dont need to redesign him to look exactly like Ruffalo, and if u think about it, the Hulk in TIH already would look like Ruffalo anyhow

@jptheredskull i read the comics but its been years since i picked up a punisher comic. i think Jane is a better actor than Stevenson and even though it might have been more like the comics I think Jane could have adapted to that style if need be. War Zone was just over the top and seemed more like a straight to cable SyFy channel movie. I enjoyed it but it was over the top

@sentox Yeah, you should have seen his MTV interview when he said Smash Hulk instead of Hulk Smash.

@superman81 Nah. If you read the comics like I do, Ray Stevenson did a way better portrayal of the character. However, the changes to the Punisher's origin in Jane's film made the Punisher's reasons for becoming the Punisher a helluva lot more effective. With Stevenson's Punisher, It was more like the comic and while it could drive a man to become a killing machine, having someone do it because there ENTIRE family, LITERALLY, is murdered is way more effective.

@redskull but Thomas Jane was a much better Punisher.

@ghostman I doubt that one character would keep people from seeing the film especially when all the other characters are great.

@Agent-Cooper Yeah. Most people also thought that TIH was a sequel to Ang Lee's which hurt it severely. The same thing happened with Punisher: War Zone which was leaps and bounds a more entertaining film than Thomas Jane's The Punisher.

I hate the way that they are changing every single detail from 'The Incredible Hulk' and tucking it into a corner like they are somehow ashamed of it. Sure, it was not fantastic like The Dark Knight for instance, but that dosen't change the fact that it is a great and entertaining movie that is at least equal to Iron Man.. And the reason it did not perform as great as they could have hoped for in the box-office (though it turn up with a healthy profit) was simply because Ang Lee's Hulk had left a bad taste in peoples mouths. Hulks '08' design was perfectly fine and there is no reason for them to go out of their way just to change it up. And Edward Norton was a perfect fit for Bruce Banner (though Mark Ruffalo is a fine choice as well). I just don't get their disdain for 'The Incredible Hulk' and their huge urge to get rid off any connections pointing towards that movie..

thanx @jptheredskull, I already knew that :P All I was sayin' was that since Hulk, and TIH weren't really a box-office smash in theatres, ppl might not see it. I'm definitely seeing it opening weekend. Just other people might not see it for Hulk. They'll see it for Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. I'm sure core Avengers fans will see it for all of them including Hulk too ;)

@ghostman Hello? The Hulk is a founding member of The Avengers and should be associated it by fans. and trust me. Not having the Hulk in the Avengers would completely and utterly destroy any chances of this film being successful.

basically everyone (including me) r all worried that since Hulk will be in The Avengers movie, that it might not make enuff money becuz ppl will associate The Avengers with having Hulk in it, means it's going to be bad. I actually think it'll be great! just people might not see it because of the Hulk. That's all. If the movie goers love Thor and Capt. America, and they already love Iron Man, this will be a blockbuster movie. I like the on all fours concept, I can assure you that he won't be like that throughout the entire film :)

They'll probably make some slight changes with the motion capture going on there, before the movie is released so that it does not look bad, if it does look bad in the end result.
