The Avengers Cinematographer Uses iPhone to Shoot Several Scenes

The Avengers is currently in post-production, with a release date set for May 4, 2012. Even though this is a big-budget ensemble, some scenes were shot in an unconventional way, using an iPhone 4. Take a look at what director of photography Seamus McGarvey had to say about using the iPhone for several shots seen in The Avengers, some of which actually made it into the trailer.

"The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film."

The cinematographer didn't reveal which shots were crafted using the smart phone, but it doesn't seem like there is any difference in quality throughout the trailer.

We reported in January that director Chan-wook Park shot an entire film on the iPhone 4, entitled Paranmanjang. It seems this smart phone could be a vital tool for future filmmakers down the road.

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

@themoviefanatic Rofl, I don't mean literally. Steve Jobs helped invent the iPhone, therefore he helped shoot scenes for The Avengers? One big technological circle. Also, look at my avatar. RIP STEVE!

What do you say about this Mr. Cameron ? with all your fancy 3D cameras ? All you need is a freaking phone and some stupid idiots to see your movie. Next up in animation , we will see papers rollin on the big screen. And maybe we will see the hand that draws the animation, wouldn't that be cool ? Or just give us a pen a phone and some f*cking paper and make our own movie in the theater.

If anyone remembers, a while back this director was reported to have made his 30 minute short with just an iPhone 4. You can clearly see the maximum quality the phone can produce. Now, marketing ploy or not, the editing room must have spent weeks trying to make an image like that better. I'm just saying.

How you know The Avengers is going to suck:

The Dark Knight Rises director Christopher Nolan and Director of photography Wally Pfister agreed that in order to intensify each scene and immerse the audience into the world of Gotham, they switched from 35mm film to IMAX 70mm film, giving the audience a much bigger, sharper canvas to experience the film on.

So what did Joss Whedon and Seamus McGarvey do to The Avengers?? They shot part of it on a f*cking Iphone.

    Wow, impressive.....

i agree with @ChiRep-1 It's a way to market the iPhone for advertising, but I am curious to know what those scenes were in the trailer, @moviewiz001 oughta know...unless he was being sarcastic :P

With enough color corection and lighting adjustment in post production you wouldn't be able to tell a difference.

Hopefully the scenes filmed with an iPhone, wont look bad in the movie when its released to theaters.

This is a marketing ploy if anything, the Iphone has nothing but a 720p HD video recorder without stabilization. Like @bawnian-dexeus said, could've just as easily been made with a Canon.

Some of the opening shots in the trailer appear to have the quality of an iPhone. The shot of the people in the coffee shop at the start looks the most like an iPhone.

@fanboy like the article said some of those scenes made it into the trailer, but you couldn't tell the difference...guess we'll have to see how it turns out when the movie is released in theaters

@ghostman That could be true, but none of the scene's in the trailer looked like that

@fanboy You never know, maybe they utilize the scenes shot with the iPhone to make it more of an impact through the NYC citizens when they are attacked, and they incorporate cell phone video attacks into the movies key action scenes?

I not sure, but I doubt that people with out alot of education in film and cameras would be able to tell what was done with what. Iphone, hand held digital, ect...

@leonidas-theofanopoulos I totally agree. Its not cool, it's f*cking stupid. What is that production budget for anyway? A camera phone can't beat the quality of film, sure it will work good for amateurs and short films on a very tight budget, but not for major Hollywood film with a $260 million budget. Very disappointed on this!

Am I the only one who thinks this is terribly stupid? So what? We'll have an already-outdated source to work with for future home video releases?? They have a 720p file which they will magically convert in 1080p for Blu-rays and so forth? iPhones are an amazing innovation and everything, but there are in no way good to film -even a part of- a movie.

That's freakin cool! maybe some day we'll have the first full length feature film shot entirely using an iPhone camera! how awesome is that?
