Director Joss Whedon announces The Avengers production start date
Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios are beginning production tomorrow (Monday) on The Avengers and director Joss Whedon made an announcement via Whedonesque:

Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)...

...So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I'm off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I'm pretty sure it's about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I'll get it. I've been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.

Catchphrase!

-j.

Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Yeah he is hard at work on Buffy. And now that he's done with Season 8 he should have time to make this film before Season 9 starts up in September.

@jptheredskull - *NEWSFLASH* Neither Thor nor Captain America have even come out yet, so how the hell would you know if they work or not?
Second, Hawkeye has never even made an appearance *yet* and anyone who thinks The HULK has "worked" in the past needs to seriously reconsider what he/she believes is a success.

So that leaves just one character in the avengers who has worked and that's Ironman......but did you see the sequel? It was a disaster......an absolute abomination of a superhero film. So his track record is 50/50.

Therefore, I stand by my comment before. Also, look at how many superhero films have succeeded and how many have failed.......and by success, I mean truly great films. The majority, unfortunately, fall under failures. Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic Four 1 and 2, Iron Man 2, The Hulk......and the remake, Spiderman 3, X-Men 3, X-Men Orgins: Wolverine.......they all suck!!!!!

Now mix up all these characters who either have or have not made an appearance yet and have them on screen all at the same time. The chances of it working are slim......not impossible.....but slim. Not to mention you have a director with virtually no feature film directing experience and who has done nothing but comedic television shows. Not exactly boosting the chances for a great, visual effects heavy film to be a success, are we? NOPE.

@dan1 Its just a matter of introducing them into the movie goers mind in a proper way. That or make a good movie and spend a lot of money on advertising. Either way, it can be done.

@skywise I think most of us agree that we'd love to see some B-tier characters get their own films as well, eventually. I want that Green Arrow movie, the Doctor Strange movie, Nightwing/Batgirl, Supergirl, the list goes on and on.

Everyone has there own take on The Avengers.....The Mime hopes that this is one of the good ones...until all the pictures, posters, and trailers come out...The Mime will just assume that it is a guaranteed awesomeness, which is quite likely........

@dan1 I agree with you, its not like they are putting out CBM every other month and hell the last good comic book super hero movie was....well damn....last summer? Granted there are a lot of indie comics that get made into movies and people dont even know they are seeing a CBM like "Red" for instance but the superhero genre definatly has legs. Some of those characters are 50 years old and more so there is a HUGE built in audience and that is fine. But what i really want to see are the lesser known heros like Doc Strange get there turn on the big screen.

They probably wont pull in the major bucks of something as well known as Batman but with a smaller budget it would allow them to take more chances and with Doc Strange there are soooo many...chances to be taken.

    blah i'm rambling.

I disagree with the notion that CBM's are coming to a close/dying breed come 2012. If anything, I feel everything we've seen thus far has just been the warm up game. Once Avengers is successful (and I say *is*, because I'm sending it positive vibes, man), then everything else will fall into place, and those 6-9 picture deals will play themselves out, DC will get in on the action or get left behind, and the quality will continue to improve the more the genre is given respect and status. Hell, look at the kind of people being cast in them these days: Anthony Hopkins, Portman, Bale, Freeman, Caine, I mean, these people are solid A-listers, and they know CBM's are the way to go for their careers. If anything, all signs point to the genre being around for quite some time to come.

Dark Knight Rises, Amazing Spiderman > The Avengers > Pretty much every movie of summer 2011 with the exception of a few of course (i.e..Green Lantern, Cowboys & Aliens)

Point is.... 2012 is gonna be a monster f*cking year that we''ll enjoy regardless of the quality. (Even though I am having a few doubts about the Avengers but keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be great)

    @jptheredskull

I already mentioned in my last post the fact that already established the character in their own movies. As for screen time, that won't be seen until the movies comes out. I don't want it to fail by any means I'm just saying that out of all the other movies this really needs to be handled with care.

    @bawnian-dexeus

And yes I do believe that it's sometimes harder to do a film that was originally based on a larger outlet.

@jptheredskull Again, I have to disagree, at least where Marvel is concerned. There are plenty of stories and villains to cull out great tales. For instance, Cap has two great villains, yet only Red Skull will be featured in the first film. One has to assume that Baron Zemo will appear for the sequel. While all of this is happening, Marvel can leave little eggs that will lead to The Avengers 2, which could be centered around Thanos, Ultron, etc. Marvel has a lot of way to go with their projects, and I doubt they will allow themselves to drop the quality in their works.

@jptheredskull its been the decade of of comic book movies, started with Spider-Man and it will end with The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises....naw comic book movies will keep going, good or not

  24. J.P.

@ejk1 I mean that in the sense that after the 2012, most of the hit franchise will be rebooting and the MCU films will likely suffer a decrease in quality. Th cbm fad as a whole will begin to fail.

  25. ejk1

@jptheredskull Considering that both Sam Jackson and Chris Evans have been signed to multi-film deals, I have to disagree. Jackson signed on for nine films, and at last count he has only appeared in two, with the Avengers being the only other certainty--in other words, I am not sure if he will be in Thor, Cap, or both. Even if he is, that brings the total to five, leaving him with an obligation for four more. There is no end in sight, whether that is good news or bad news is up to the viewer.

@jptheredskull@ejk1@daveactor7 - just checking, but what the heck, it's hard to pick what my most anticipated film of 2012 will be. All I know is it will be huge and I'll die happy, if that truly be the end of the world :P

@ejk1@fanboy@bawnian-dexeus Unfortunately guys, I do think the end of cbms may be upon us next year.

  28. ejk1

@bawnian-dexeus The Avengers will most likely be out of most theaters when TDKR arrives on July 20. The Amazing Spider-Man will feel the effects much more, as TDKR will directly cut into that film's profits.

@jptheredskull Yeah sorry, I tend to sometimes have a weird writing style, lol. But I also agree with you on the future Marvel films, especially with Disney in control. I really want this movie to work out and be great, but from what ive seen so far I have my doubts, but of course they just started shooting and ill hold my tongue until we see the first trailer/teaser which my guess will be Christmas 2011. Prove me wrong Joss, your our only hope (considering your the director)

I hope this film doesn't fail because if it does fail, then all Marvel's hard work would waste.

Thor is getting good reviews so I think I go to the cinemas.

    Captain America seems great.

So I hope The Avengers doesn't fall apart because of too much characters.
