Don't woz i don't, in fact i take that as a major compliment :)
I love the oldies, they just dont make films like it any more.
Trust me i had to slap myself twice when my 16yr old Girlfriend told me she knew who Laurel and Hardy, Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton was.
Hehe i remember that reference in Monster Inc, studied Harryhausen for expressive arts, for our final piece we recreated the Medusa scene from Clash Of The Titans.
And preferably since my time being here on movieweb, this is probably the most adult and mature discussion, that ever probably graced foot in these comment sections, and probably one of the best and most educational

mikehd, don't take this the wrong way, but comparing Harryhausen with today's effects is like comparing apples and oranges. "Back in the day", Harryhausen was what ILM, WETA and Pixar are today. He was the go to man, especially in the late sixties and seventies.
The Sinbad films alone would not be what they were without him. And the new Clash of the Titans remake with Sam Worthington, might not have even been considered if it wasn't for Harryhausen's effects. They paved the way for the effects we have today.
Pixar even gave a little tribute. The Sushi bar Mike Wazoski takes his girlfriend Celia to, in the movie Monsters Inc., was called Harryhausen's.

Sorry Ottley, Didn't realize your were part of the "younger generation". It's just that you have knowledge beyond your years. Please don't take it as an insult. It wasn't meant to be.
It's rare to hear that there is someone so young today, who knows the classics. It's disheartening when "you" make a comment about an older film and the listener says, "What's that"?

Oh, and thanks for the compliment. I know what you mean by other people just going straight to bashing and not thoroughly arguing their point politely. I am guilty of it at times, but thanks for the complement. I respect you, and your views.

No mikehd, if Spielberg gets his wish, which he probably will and it will never see the light of day for production his other 12 projects.
He'll be going straight to ILM for SFX for Halo, notice that all Spileberg films the SFX is always done by ILM.

your welcome, Fallen.
Yeah i know, i've seen the interview, its a load of bullsh*t really just Lucas trying to take credit, just because majority of Pixar's starting group came from ILM GGD, doesn't mean he founded it.
Pixar was founded after Steve Jobs bought out the division, therefore rightfully it was never owned by Lucas at the time.
But thats Lucas for you, some over-bighead fat ass cash cow that thinks his someone amazing because he made Star Wars.
Hmmmm, i actually never knew that Vanboy, i appreciate that. I was like you i always though Harryhausen did it, lol.
I find this quote quite randomly funny as well
"Who is Ray Harryhausen"? The younger generation. They don't know what they're missing.
considering i'm 19, that is funny :D

J.A. your points are very valid. Thanks for the additional info. I rest my case. I give. My mikehd, you too had good points. Don't get me wrong I love ILM. their my second favorite in the entire world. But I just liked Weta better. To each their own.

Titanic was a great movie. Everything with that movie was flawless. The special effects were superb!
Remember, Pearl Harbor is the movie that was hyped and didn't deliver. Bay tried to capitalize on Titanic when he made Pearl Harbor. But you can't take a military incident and try to turn it into a romance film. Pearl Harbor should have been up there with Tora, Tora Tora and Saving Private Ryan. But like I said, Bay wanted his Titanic and totally missed the mark, much to the dismay of all of the WWII veterans who went to see it. If all of that romance nonsense was edited out of that movie, it would probably only be about fourty minutes long.

Wall-E was as Ottley said.."...It is the best animation i've ever watched or gazed upon, technically was the best film of the year...
Pixar always comes up with a real life lesson, tucked under our entertainment, without being too preachy.
And no matter how anybody ties to deny it, Pixar movies always manage to make the eyes misty, despite our efforts to prevent it.
"Who is Ray Harryhausen"? The younger generation. They don't know what they're missing.
Ottley, the stop motion animator on the original King Kong was done by a man named Willis O'Brien. O'Brien made a short 1931 film called Creation. Merrion C. Cooper thought that the effects in King Kong couldn't be done, until he screened the footage of Creation, and he decided that O'Brien's stop motion effects were the answer to his problem.
I had thought that Harryhausen did King Kong until I watched the extra features in my King Kong collection, which includes King Kong, Son of Kong and Might Joe Young.

I seriously can't wait to see this. I just got back from Inglourious Basterds(which was superb, by the way), and about half of the theater aplauded after this trailer ended. It was a packed theater, too. Anyway, it looks amazing. The floating mountain idea is completely epic. The huge battle sequence with the Navi flying those big dragon things vs. the humans looks insane. And I agree with some of you that it looks like Apocalypse Now, Dances With Wolves, and a few other epics put together, which is a great thing. I just wish it said "From Directer JAMES CAMERON" instead of "From the Director of TITANIC". Don't get me wrong, I think Titanic was outstanding. I just think the man who brought us Aliens, T2, Titanic, and The Abyss should put his name up there for the world to see, instead of calling back to what lots of people said was a very overrated movie.

Predators, are you serious?! 40 minutes of T4 deleted scenes. That's a lot. How can there be that much that was deleted? Well, sounds good to me. I didn't contemplate that T4 would have deleted scenes except Moon's. Can't wait for the Bluray!

Ottley, it's true what mikehd says. Lucas in an interview said, "I created the Pixar program and then sold it". I can't remember what I was watching when I heard that, but I was surprised when I heard him say that, because I thought that Pixar was created by its own people, and that it was its own entity.

Welllll he didn't really find it, just because the people that founded Pixar came from a subsidary of ILM doesn't mean he founded it. When it was with Lucasfilm it was called ILM Graphics Group Division (ILM GGD).
After Steve Jobs bought out the division he gave control to Ed Catmull, whom also left with John Lasseter.
I would technically say Lasseter made the company what it was since he created Toy Story, but Steve Jobs founded it.
Woooooooooooo, your having a discussion on SFX and all that but yet your don't know the name of the founding father of SFX which began with good old stopmotion.
Ray Harryhausen created and pioneered SFX throughout the early 1940s to the 1970s, he did such massive hits as the Sinbad movies, Mighty Joe Young, Jason & The Argonauts and Clash Of The Titans.
brief before ILM there was Ray Harryhausen.

Ok sorry to butt in to the SFX argument. But i need a say. Just need to you know rewind spin back the record slam it down and set the baby straight, because i'm sorry Mike & Fallen, as much as i respect you both and your opinions.
Here my cents
First off Kudos to mike, mention Wall-E, It is the best animation i've ever watched or gazed upon, technically was the best film of the year visually, cinematically and screenplay wise one of.
Straight up that's Pixar's masterpiece.
Right lets compare Weta Digital/Workshop compare to Industrial Light & Magic
Weta Digital despite being founded in 1993 by Peter Jackson, Richard Taylor & Jamie Selkirk, did only 4 films between the time span of 1993 - 2000 in which the next year they became much more mainstream with the first installment of LOTR, which gaved them more critcal praisal with the SFX industry and notable competition to Hollywood's superior SFX company, ILM.
But previously before Weta Digital was created, Weta Workshop was known for other stuff such as creature creation and production and makup for both Sam Raimi created TV series Xena & Hercules.
Also within the last current 9yrs WETA has been known to be REVOLUTIONISING the SFX industry to new capabilities, with such products as LOTR, King Kong, District 9 and the upcoming hits Neon Genesis Evangelion and of course the above that you see before you JAMES CAMERON'S AVATAR, which is slated to be a revolutionary preview of what WETA can do.
Now to ILM founded by cashcow dickwad George 'I will make more star wars movies' Lucas, founded the comapny in 1975 when he found out the SFX department for Star Wars Episode IV had been shut down, and he wanted SFX that were never seen before for Star Wars. Despite being rejected by Douglas Trumbull, he recommended his assistant, Mr Dykstra, whom formed a group and they became a special visual effects group.
In which Lucas & Spielberg having such a good realtionship, which was formed before the creation fo Indiana Jones, Spielberg was stunned by Star Wars, in which is why Spielberg uses ILM for every film he directs.
In which ILM found CGI graphics with the assisstance of Edward Catmull & John Lasseter, in which eventually both moved on, when Steve Jobs bought out ILM digital Division and created PIXAR, in which created the very first revolutionary CGI animated film Toy Story.
But ILM continued to have its praisal with a ton of Spielberg films and of course being known as the only mainstream SFX company between 1975 and 2001, gives it a massive advantage over WETA.
It doesn't really matter which SFX company is better considering the simple fact that ILM had a approx 27yr head start, but it can be notified that what WETA has done within the previous 9 years is bloody impressive.
But if we are to be very technical with this lovely discussion were missing the biggest factor...
What destroys Pixar, ILM & WETA and well ladies and gentlemen....
That name is RAY HARRYHAUSEN
