Earlier today, we reported on a character cameo rumor that puts Peter Parker as The Amazing Spider-Man appearing in Marvel's the Avengers. This particular rumor seemed unlikely for a variety of reasons. The main one being that different studios own the film rights to both franchise properties. But now, a more detailed plot synopsis for The Amazing Spider-Man makes this rumor seems a little more likely (not much, though), especially if you know your Spider-man history.
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are currently touring the world with a couple of producers on The Amazing Spider-Man, offering a sneak peek at seven minutes of footage, followed by a Q & A session. As they visit India, a new story synopsis has surfaced, which gives us a little more background on the full story being told in the film.
This is the plot rundown as released by The Times of India

"The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero."
The interesting thing about this plot synopsis that hasn't yet been revealed is that Peter Parker is propelled on this quest after finding a briefcase that once belonged to his father that ties into a mystery at Oscorp.
As some have pointed out in the comment section of the Marvel's the Avengers cameo rumor story, and as we've noted in the past, official Marvel lore has Peter's parents, Richard and Mary, dying in a plane crash as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. As seen in the above photo from The Amazing Spider-Man Official site, which also includes a photo of Peter's parents not looking much different from their S.H.I.E.L.D. incarnation in "Untold Tales of Spider-Man" #1 (you kind of have to squint to see them), this briefcase is playing a central part in the overall plot. As the driving force behind bringing Spider-Man back to the big screen seems to be the story behind Richard and Mary, its actually quite likely that there will be a Spider-Man cameo in Marvel's the Avengers if they at all plan to stay true to the history of the comic books.
It seems like a win-win for both studios. If Spider-man is in Marvel's the Avengers, then The Amazing Spider-Man will get to reference S.H.I.E.L.D. Either that, or Richard and Mary worked for some pseudo company. Which will be fine for most audience members to accept, I'm guessing.
What we could be seeing here is a slow merge of all Marvel properties on-screen. Who knows, maybe next we'll hear about Wolverine being in Marvel's the Avengers (though, rest assured, 20th Century Fox would never allow that to happen).
The Amazing Spider-Man was released July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

If they are basing this off the cartoon... which it sounds like, then his parents had to leave behind peter because they were undercover hydra agents for shield. And i heard recently that he makes an appearance in the avengers movie... most likely at the end. Spider-man will join the avengers, or else there would be no real reason to reboot the franchise..

@narrator I'm guessing it's just going to be the government, with no mention of SHIELD.

I think i better watch the movie to understand Peter Parker's origins.

Well there is another origin storyline that came after the SHIELD agent parents where Parker's parents had found a cure for cancer or some sort of cure for something and they were killed because of it. Which would tie in much nicer for a scientific, medical lab research facility that Doc Conners runs. Although I'd much rather see the SHIELD agent storyline happen and tie in with the Avengers. Spidey was at times part of the Avengers crew. As well as Wolvie, and other random heroes.

I really, really don't want to see connections between Spider-Man and the Avengers. I don't read comics so I'm sure I'm missing something, but for me Iron-Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America were all spoiled by Samuel Jackson popping up and reminding audiences to watch the other movies. The idea that all these super heroes live in the same universe devalues them, they're no longer special or outcast. If the same happens to Spider-Man the story will become incidental. That's why Chris Nolan's Batman is so great, there's no Wonder Woman or Super Man in that franchise, just Batman.

@shuabert, I'm confused there as well. Some people have claimed that Sony and Disney may have come to an agreement to use each others properties, but I doubt it. Makes you wonder who Peter's parents worked for, if not S.H.I.E.L.D.

@narrator Interesting point. Can Sony even USE SHIELD in their Spider-Man films? They've been featured prominently in the Disney/Marvel films, so one would think the rights are solely in that camp.

I want to watch it. I still hate the idea of a reboot. And I also find it hard to take the Andrew is playing a huge USA super hero, yet is British. The story is not the diffrent from anything Rami has done. They say abandon, and not die, but that just to put the spin on the mind set of Peter. A Emo type which is what this who world is angled to. But the rest seams like a poorly put together idea. May end up being really good, but some of it seams more forced in what has been said about the story so far. Avengers come out first, so how can a cameo with him be real anyway? It could happen, but how if this movie is to show is "beginnings"? It would be like showing Superman in the next Batman movie with out the new Superman movie coming out.

I remember hearing something about the briefcase a few months ago but it's nice to get a lot more context about everything.

I would like to discover some dirt on Peter's Parents. Probably the best sounding part of the film.

A new trailer would be greatly appreciated, but the synopsis is interesting. I like how they used the word "abandoned" instead of "died". Lol. Interesting to see what S.H.I.E.L.D. has to do with this.

I like the synopsis. Sounds diffrent from Raimi's which is a good thing. Although I love Raimi's Spider-Man movies (loved the first two and enjoyed the third), if they plan on rebooting them then at least make them diffrent. It seems to me like they did so.
