James Vanderbilt will write The Amazing Spider-Man sequel
James Vanderbilt wrote the original draft of The Amazing Spider-Man when Sony decided to scrap Spider-man 4 and reboot the series from scratch. He was working on Spider-Man 4 at the time this decision happened.
Alvin Sargent, who co-wrote Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, has also worked on The Amazing Spider-Man script. Only time will tell if Alvin Sargent is brought in to help with the sequel script as well.
The Amazing Spider-Man will wrap production in Los Angeles sometime in mid-April. James Vanderbilt also wrote Zodiac, The Losers, and provided a polish for the Total Recall remake as well.
The Amazing Spider-Man was released July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, Irrfan Khan, Campbell Scott. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

no surpirse. they're just trying to lock up pieces needed for a sequel should the first (fourth?) be successful. if it's not, it's pretty easy (and affordable) to dump a writer.

Quite the spider-hate going on here :P
I say good for them for planing a sequel ahead of time instead of waiting to see how the first one goes. That means they're looking at making a REAL reboot, restarting with a plan set in motion and a story that could very well span the coarse of 6 films. Don't wait. Plan now and work out the kinks BEFORE principle photography instead of after. Good for them! :D

Not surprising seeing that this movie is gonna make a substantial amount of money due to the fanbase. I dont know why but everytime we see another article posted about this Spidey reboot I get the feeling this is gonna end up like the Punisher reboot and suck ass on an epic level.

I think this is good news. But Vanderbilt was not working on Spider-Man 4 when they gave Raimi their ultimatum and he walked. As a matter of fact, Vanderbilt's work on that project had long been done and they had already signed Vanderbilt for the next two installments, so as to reduce time between movies. The writers working on Spider-Man 4 after Vanderbilt were David Lindsay-Abaire, Gary Ross, and Alvin Sargent. Because Raimi could not grasp the villains, and the writers he demanded to have rewrite the script (which the studio kept wasting money on, and was one of the reasons the studio came to Raimi and gave their ultimatum), were not giving Raimi what he wanted. Gary Ross had just finished a draft that Raimi apparently didn't like either and he was about to put his man Alvin Sargent on board to write exactly what he wanted, which it came out was The Vulture (which the studio told him 'no') and that rumor about a made-up villain Felicia Hardy/The Vulturess. Vanderbilt, by this time, was instead working on imagining a treatment for Spider-Man 5. Which, now, would be The Amazing Spider-Man 2. So this news does not surprise me since Sony already had him on board for the next two installments.

This is a mistake. With more than a year until ASM, Marvel should wait until they see the fan response to decide the best way to move forward. Besides, if the first film is good, then why not let Sargent script the sequel? It could be a mistake to let a writer take over from another, because the change could be dramatic, and if they eventually bring Sargent in, it could cause turmoil and setbacks. My advice is to wait, and then let Sargent continue if ASM proves critically successful (I didn't mention commercial success mainly because I believe this film is close to bulletproof).

@bawnian-dexeus Or at least a teaser which should hit either at the beginning of June at the MTV Movie Awards 2011 on June 3rd or in July at this years Comic-Con

WOW. For a sequel to be in development when the first hasn't even finished principal photagraphy yet, the guys on this project must be doing something right.
