Also testing on Monday are the lesser-known actors Boyd Holbrook (Out of the Furnace), Wilson Bethel (The CW's Hart of Dixie), and Tom Cocquerel (a true newcomer with no substantial roles to his name yet).
Michael Biehn originated the role of Kyle Reese in the original 1984 classic The Terminator. The character was sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor and ends up becoming the father to the future savior of mankind, John Connor.
The character isn't as precious as some in pop culture, with Jonathan Jackson playing the role in the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Anton Yelchin playing a younger, pre-Sarah Connor version in the failed reboot Terminator Salvation.
Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke has already signed onto play Sarah Connor, with the older Jason Clarke (no relation) playing her son John. Arnold Schwarzenegger has before in the past confirmed that he will 'be back' as the iconic title character, but that has never been confirmed by the studios.
Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor will direct. No plot details have been revealed at this time, though there will be an element of time travel. The fact that John is older than Sarah in the movie brings up an interesting question about how things are being literally rebooted. Its possible that the fifth film will take a page out of the Star Trek playbook, and completely re-write the history that was previously in play.
Paramount originally wanted the slighty more well known actors Nicholas Hoult and Garrett Hedlund to audition, but neither parties were interested. This led the studio to focus on actors who are still trying to make a name for themselves, some more so than others at this point.
Skydance and Annapurna are co-financing the project alongside Paramount. Patrick Lussier, best known for directing genre thrillers Drive Angry and My Bloody Valentine 3D, is writing the screenplay.
