Terminator 5 Loses Director Justin Lin, But He Might Be Back

Justin Lin has to leave Terminator 5
Justin Lin has to leave Terminator 5
Rights owner Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger have set Terminator 5 to begin production the fourth quarter of 2012, which has forced director Justin Lin to drop out because of his previous commitment to Fast & Furious 6. Terminator 5 is one of two Terminator franchise films the trio planned to make together.

Justin Lin hopes to return if Megan Ellison and Arnold Schwarzenegger will wait until he completes Fast & Furious 6.

Megan Ellison's Annapurna Films spent over $20 million to buy film rights during the Cannes Film Festival, with Justin Lin and Arnold Schwarzenegger attached. There is, however, no script or anything in hand, so delaying the project for Justin Lin might not be out of the question.

However, certain rights revert back to James Cameron due to a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. James Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018.

Terminator 5 is in development and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I just re-watched T1, T2, and Salvation this week (skipped T3 this time), and as much as did enjoy Salvation, I think they should leave these alone now.
I mean everyone just pretended T3 never happened story-wise, Salvation for some reason had negative reviews and is pretty much going to be ignored if they make another one, and Sarah Connor Chronicles doesn't fit in the movies timeline. So basically there's 3 "failed" projects to continue the franchise. If they don't make a sequel to Salvation I think they should just give it up already.

I hate it when directors commit to a billion projects at once. Do one at a time.

@rudy -- This is great news, and I personally feel they don't need a director - just let it be.

@skywise yes i really dont think cameron will do anything with the franchise, as he has stated he is done with terminator and wont go back to aliens... although my theory is if he does continue it in any format might just hang on as executive producer so that he can get a paycheck from it, but honestly i would not want to be a part of it... there is too much fixing to be done to the franchise and obviously if he had dont a continuation afer T2 would have turned out much different then what we see of it today. But regardless i dont think he would have continued it after T2.. i think i read that his story was done after part 2, much like lucas has said return of the jedi ended his story.

better he just stick with his fancy cars. Someone needs to get a REAL director to helm the terminator franchise. But then again, I think their just gonna make a reboot of terminator.
