Tarzan to Take a Page from Pirates of the Caribbean?

Stephen Sommers will be giving a new look to the story about a boy raised by apes. According to Entertainment Weekly, Sommers will be directing Tarzan from a script by Stuart Beattie, and the film is said to take on the tone of one of Beattie's earlier films.

"Think Pirates of the Caribbean with buffed-and-tanned actors flying through the jungle and sprinting up trees, parkour-style," stated the article.

Beattie wrote an early draft of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and received a screen story credit on the film. He recently wrote Australia, which is in theaters now, and he also wrote the script for Sommers' G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, which hits theaters next year.

Tarzan comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Craig Brewer.

    Mario Lopez HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Vis.... I gotcha. And you probably COULD do it better. Judging by the character's history in the cinema, it wouldn't hurt. ;)

And Chad... unfortunately, they get me with name drops too. I think we all fall victims to that sometimes haha

lol all they have to do is put 'from the guys who brought you pirates of the caribbean and g.i. joe' and you have asses in the seats. I'll admit that sells me when I see name drops lol. "Oh that guy did this or these guys are in it!?" haha

I think this movie could be good if done right too. Just as long as they do not get someone like Mario Lopez to play Tarzan.

I'm not talking about Box Office or if people care about it, I'm talking about this can be a GOOD movie if done right, for the reasons I stated...I still think I could do it better than Sommers...;)

Sorry Vis but I disagree. Hollywood has tried and tried and tried...... and tried to make Tarzan a successful character in the movies, but no one is interested. They've tried dramatic ones (Legend of Greystoke - grossed 45 million (cost 35 million to make)), they've tried sexy stars (Tarzan, the Ape Man (with Bo Derek) - grossed 36 million (cost 60 million to make), they've even tried a spoof of Tarzan (George of the Jungle - grossed 105 million (cost 55 million to make))... and though the latter did ok (not great), none of them were huge hits.... because nobody really cares for this character. The only REAL successful adaptation of Tarzan was an animated film due to the audience - children. That one grossed 171 million but cost 145 million to make.... Not really a huge money maker here in the US when you make 26 million dollar profit. Studios usually want more. That cartoon however, did great overseas as it made 448 million world wide. Still... it looks to me that if its not animation, then its a waste of time and money. I will guarantee that this movie will bomb at the box office if and when its released. Bet on it

Tarzan? Give me a f*cking break. How many Tarzans are they going to make? It's not like we won't know what the plot will be about. Boooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrring!

I think Tarzan could be a good movie if done right. I think the idea of a man living in the wild all by himself, hunting down animals for food and befriending others can carry a movie...if done right. I think it could be emotional and action packed...if done right. I think it could be on par with Jackson's King Kong even, or at least the story could be, prob. not the scope...but possibly. Just replace King Kong with Tarzan and Anne Darrow with what's her name that Tarzan falls for. They both battle large animals and both find "love" in the jungle with a beautiful women. This could be Tarzan...if done right. With this in mind, I don't think Sommers is the man for this. I guess they want to make Tarzan far-fetched, cuz Sommers's movies have never been believable. Jackson made King Kong believable made us care for him...the same could be done for Tarzan, and Sommers isn't the guy for THAT particular vision...my vision...maybe I could do it ;)

(I guess I have to post this again)They weren't indicating that PotC was just buff and tan looking guys, they're indicating what the TARZAN movie will be like. It'll be an adventure film ON PAR with PotC, but will be more jungle based, hence the "buffed-and-tanned actors flying through the jungle and sprinting up trees" They weren't talking about Pirates with that statement

Anyways, no offense Chad, but I think the "aren't there better things they could be working on" argument doesn't do anything. Hollywood WILL be working on more important projects WHILE also working on this one. There's still going to be a Pirates 3, and I bet we'll hear something about it soon. In fact, I think we already have

Cell, I also think your argument is a load of crap. I'm more blunt with you because I don't respect you. You think just because the last Tarzan movie bombed, this one will too? Your as narrow minded about this as you are about re-makes

Tarzan has NEVER been a real fan favorite. No Tarzan movie has EVER gone to box office glory. This is a dumb idea.

And to compare Tarzan with Pirates is even dumber than reviving this character. I mean, unless they're gonna have Tarzan walk around in drag and look drunk, you can't compare it. Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow made the Pirate franchise... not the buff and tan looking guys. And Sparrow is a much more intriguing character than a guy swinging on vines, picking ticks off apes, pounding his chest, and yelling "Aaaaahhh Ahahahhhhh Ahahahhhhhhhhh".

I realized that people comment really stupid things. Like they get so worked up over nothing. Anyway, the only thing I don't understand is why they want to greenlight this film? Why Tarzan? Isn't there cooler ideas of other projects they should focus on or maybe waste money on? Like another Pirates movie? They left us with a cliffhanger at the end of 3, so why aren't they busting their ass to work on that instead? Why do we need Tarzan so badly? I know it's the time of remakes or revives, it's just getting dumb now. There are a lot of movies that need touched up, but Tarzan isn't that great of an idea to be redone or brought up ever again. It's like making another Jungle Book movie. We don't need it.

I'm not too sure about this one. The heading for the article almost made me scoff and rant, but I read the article through and through because sometimes I do that with the headings for these articles, but I kind of like the idea, though I agree with ridgl: "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" as well as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" are WAY more than just buff and tan actors flying around. It was an excellent adventure, and a Pirate film that was actually GOOD!!!!!!!!!! LOLZ!!!!!!!!!!
