German studio Constantin Film is bringing a classic character back to live with a new Tarzan animated 3D film, according to Variety. Despite its German roots, the film will be an English-language film, which will be produced by Robert Kulzer and Reinhard Klooss.

The studio acquired the rights to the film from the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the first novel in the series - "Tarzan of the Apes" - in 1912 and went on to spawn numerous sequel novels and other works, including the the 1932 film Tarzan, The Ape Man starring Johnny Weissmuller, which itself spawned a number of film sequels. In 1999, Disney released an animated Tarzan, which grossed $442 million worldwide.

The film is not to be confused with the live-action Tarzan film that has been in development at Warner Bros. for several years. Back in 2008, we reported that director Stephen Sommers was coming on board the project to direct, but we haven't heard any further news on the project since then.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on this new Tarzan animated 3D film as soon as we have more information.

$442 million, man that's a lot of cheddar. I wouldn't have figured that movie would have made that much.
