Despite Zack Snyder's insistence that General Zod will not be the villain in his upcoming Superman reboot, the director and producer Christopher Nolan are currently eyeing Viggo Mortensen for that exact role.

Viggo Mortensen is still in negotiations to play the Huntsman in Universal Pictures fairytale retelling Snow White and the Huntsman. If he does not close the deal, he will move directly into Superman. If he does play the Huntsman, the hope is that he will be able to work out his schedule with Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. so that he can do both movies.

At this time, sources close to the actor claim that talks have not commenced and that when it comes to portraying General Zod, Viggo Mortensen is just a "person of interest". The same is true of Kevin Costner, who was recently announced as Pa Kent. While other actors are being considered for both roles, Viggo Mortensen and Kevin Costner are at the top of a very short list.

Zack Snyder is also in the midst of casting Lois Lane and General Zod's right-hand woman Ursa, with Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike rumored to be up for that role.

Official casting announcements for Superman are expected soon.

    Since MW obviously decided not to post my comment last night, I'll try again for a tenth time...

    I like Viggo and of course this would be perfect casting, but I, much like many others am sick of seeing the same villians used. First there were rumors of Ursa being in it, and now this. Even if they're not the main villians, I share the same sentiments that @ejk1 has. I don't want to see a retread, and I certainly don't want something that's "supposed" to be a reboot turn into more of a "remake". It doesn't need to be done. The movie needs to be different... in nearly every way possible.

    This is exactly why I didn't want a reboot... that sequel to Returns with Braniac is sounding real good right about now. Atleast then we'd actually be moving AHEAD instead of behind.

    Selling out is like writer's block, they both don't exist. Selling out is just a term fanboys come up with when actors/artists get a bigger payday. Anyways, even though I think this is just pure speculation, I would relish the chance to see Zod back. I am self-admittedly more of a Batman fan, but I think one of the only interesting villains in the Superman universe is Zod. Why not just be excited for a good movie instead of worry about it being a reboot or not? If it is bad there is always Dark Knight Rises :-)

    @k-man Don't mind @2movieguys. "Selling out" is his go to insult because he's uncreative and bias. He sees "superhero franchise reboot" and his mind immediately goes to "anybody involved is a sell out." He can't distinguish between a necessary reboot such as this one and milking a franchise.

    i think it is a good choice... as far as selling out, i am not sure the term really applies anymore. hell downey jr. must have for iron man, depp probably did with jack sparrow, and maguire did it as well with spider-man... okay it was wrong to group maguire in with the first two, but the point being is that every actor eventually finds a roll that familiarizes them with the general public... although i think Mortensen did that with LOTR's, i feel he has still kept grounded, and there is no reason not to still make the films that he wants to make, but this would be a bigger paycheck than he is used to. i say go for it, it could be worse, they could get nick cage to do it... OH NO HE DI'INT!

    Brainiac, Mongul, Darkseid or his minions, Doomsday, Parasite, and my choice, Humanite, would all be perfect for a reboot. it's just a matter of blending at least one well. And Nolan knows or at least should know that realism won't wing well with Superman. I'm just saying

    I like the idea. It would kind of neutralize the character's over-the-top portrayed in Superman II. That said, Snyder already said Zod WOULDN'T be in the movie, so I don't know why the press is still clinging on to the possibility.
