To no surprise, Superman Returns won the weekend box office - the surprise came with the dollar amount, a somewhat disappointing $52 million. The Bryan Singer-directed super hero film was expected to take in much more than that after opening two days earlier on June 28th, especially with the enormous positive buzz it was receiving. But since Wednesday's release, the Warner Bros. film has made $84.2 million - again, much lower than what people expected.

Maybe some of that money went to the big winner of the weekend - Fox's The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, the film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger's novel. The fashionista flick debuted this weekend with an extremely impressive $27 million. The movie is loosely based on Anna Wintour, the editor of the magazine, Vogue (of whom Weisberger used to be an assistant).

Last week's number one, Adam Sandler's Click, came in third place this weekend with $19.4 million. That brings the total of the family comedy to $78 million, which also stars a very sexy Kate Beckensale, Henry Winkler, and David Hasselhoff.

Disney/Pixar's Cars most likely came in with one more week of an 8-digit total, bringing in a still hopeful $14 million. As most Disney insiders say, the four-week total of $182 million is still well below what they expected. The company, however, is looking forward to this week when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opens on July 7th.

In fifth place, Jack Black as Nacho Libre wrestled in $6.1 million over the weekend. The film, directed by Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess has brought its three-week total up to $65 million - you have to believe Paramount is extremely happy with the way this film has done so far.

Apparently, there are still some romantic drama fans out there - or maybe it's because people just want to see Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock again. But, Warner's The Lake House picked up $4.5 million over the weekend to come in sixth place. The total for the film, which also stars Christopher Plummer, has made $38.7 million in three weeks.

Racing fans made The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift a seventh place finisher; the third installment of the series made $4.4 million for the weekend. Without Paul Walker, but with Vin Diesel making a cameo, the Universal film has a fairly impressive total of $51.6 million over three weeks.

Coming in eighth place, Tyrese, The Game, Meagan Good, and Larenz Tate in the urban-drama Waist Deep. The Bonnie and Clyde-type film brought in $3.3 million over the weekend. Directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall, in two weeks, the Rogue film has made just over $15 million.

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn have stayed hot at the box office; their romantic comedy The Break-Up remains in the top ten, at number nine. The Universal film laughed it up with $2.8 million to take its total to $110 million, which is more than double the $52 million production budget.

And finally, it might be the last week for Sony's The Da Vinci Code in the top ten, coming in tenth place with $2.3 million. Domestically, that brings the total to $209.7 million; however, internationally, the Dan Brown novel adaptation has brought in $496 million. That makes it a world-wide total of nearly $706 million, which puts it at #22 all time.

As far as this week's winner - if there's any surprise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest should easily take the weekend box office. My guess is somewhere in the $100-$110 million range for the weekend. With no other real competition coming out, Pirates might even be in the top spot for three weeks straight.
