Superman Not Tied to Any Previous Movie, Kevin Costner Is Jonathan Kent

Director Zack Snyder talked with The LA Times about his upcoming Superman movie, which stars Henry Cavill as the man from Krypton, and said that the new film will not be tied to any previous film featuring the character, unlike 2006's Superman Returns, which felt like a sequel to 1978's Superman.

"Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we're making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there's been no other Superman movies. If you look at 'Batman Begins,' there's that structure, there's the canon that we know about and respect but on other hand there's this approach that pre-supposes that there haven't been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of respect the canon but don't be a slave to the movies."

Zack Snyder also alluded to the action of Superman:

"Our Superman, he's got things to figure out but he's a physical cat."

The director confirmed Kevin Costner will play Jonathan Kent and suggests this version of Superman will go beyond what has been seen before:

"You know that if you do Superman right - or at least if you do him with respect - you know you end up with something great.... [but] in some ways [beyond] that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be? People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong."

Man of Steel comes to theaters June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, Julia Ormond. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

As cool as I thought it was that "Superman Returns" payed homage to the originals, I think it did drag the film down. I think they are making the right decision in making this the "Batman Begins" of the Superman franchise.

@billyboy No problem. And yeah, DC/WB both still have the rights to the Fortress, among many other Superman elements, just not anything from Action Comics #1 pitched by Siegel and Shuster after the dates I mentioned for both mediums.

@comicbookfan Thanks for that. They could go the other way though if it's the only chance to give their version. I don't mind either way really as long as the film is good.
I'm guessing that they still have rights to the Fortress then? I'll be happy with a new one.

The "film rights" to the Superman Krypton origin from Action Comics #1 expired if WB did not get a Superman film into production by 2011. The DC print media rights expire in 2013. So for the film, the rights do not expire in 2013. Truth be told, this is the last chance for a Superman film to tell the Krypton origin. However, in my own humble opinion, I'm thinking they may just avoid it so as to not have to reference any of it in potential sequels, which will not have the rights at all.

gandoff2169 Glad you agree on that. Let's not forget Kevin Smith writing his version which included Brianiac (script and storyboards on web) as a Villian. Remember monkey see monkey do, if Green Lantern does huge with its Sci-Fi Space elements they will push Superman into that direction. Unless script is nailed down completely but the again there's the re-writes. Hulk (Ang Lee) had 6 writers and Knight Day (Cruise) had 8 writers. No matter the Genre there's the re-writes.

I certainly didn't feel like SR was a sequel to Superman. It felt like a standalone film to me and I really liked it. I see where he's going with it but I think he got that wrong. Great move bringing in Costner and Lane!

I partialy agree with @furankisan on the subject of Lex. Lex is the ultimate villian to Superman. Just as the Joker is to Batman. But what would be more in line with a beining to the Man of Steel, then to have him learn the ropes aginst a "lesser" villian, or atleast someone not seen on film yet? They did that to Batman and the begining story worked perfectly. But the real question is, who would be the starting villain if it is done? There are in fact only 5 major villains for Superman. They are Lex, Zod, Bizzaro, Dooms Day, and Dark Side. And in my opinion, they are in order from weakest to strongest.

Origin story been done to death. Lex been there done that. Just accept Superman as part of Society and bring on the villians already There is so much backlog on his history you need to bring it to the next level...Of course meeting a deadline doesn't help matters, this will have no heart to it.

@billyboy According to @comicbookfan's info, WB cannot use any references to do with Krypton, so that is basically out the door. I'm wondering if that will effect us seeing or hearing Jor-El. As for this article, it is no surprise that this will not link with the other movies. That is why they ended the direction Singer was taking the franchise with SR. Synder saying this allows his film to not undergo fire the way Spider-Man did once Avi Arad opened his mouth a month or two ago, saying that the new film will be linked to Raimi's (which is idiotic).

  21. Lane

@jptheredskull No. That was only if they didn't get a film into production by this year or the next (the main reason it's being rushed). The rights expire in 2013. Until then, they can tell or show as much of the origin story as they want.

@billyboy @lane1 @dark-env They won't show his origin in this film. DC comics and Warneer Bros. legally can't portray superman's origin on film. They recently lost a court case in which they lost the rights to do so because they failed to make a new film by a certain date.

So, this film will probably portray a young superman but won't show his origin again.

  25. Billyboy

@lane & @dark-env I didn't want the origin going over again at first but I now I'm looking forward to it. I can't see how they'd make this a fresh start without it. Even if it's just through flashbacks. Once the slate is wiped clean the scope is infinite for Snyder. I'd love to see a new Fortress of Solitude with many rooms. I never really bought the huge crystal castle that seemed to only have a tiny console room (and convenient 'power -removing booth'.

  29. Dark enV

@lane1 yes it was a retelling but according to Nolan, David S. Goyer came up with a way to introduce the story in a different way that hasn't been done before but still makes sense, so if they tell the origin, which I think they will, it will be told a bit differently
